This endowment will support graduate students pursuing their PhD in botany in the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa College of Natural Sciences&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.botany.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Botany<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Over the years, <abbr>UHPA<\/abbr> has made contributions to the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Foundation in support of students and faculty, often in response to matching contributions made by faculty members to scholarships. This contribution reflects the wishes of David Duffy, who has foregone a part-time paid leave of absence as <abbr>UHPA<\/abbr> president and requested that the funds be used to establish the Lani Stemmermann Endowment,&rdquo; said <abbr>UHPA<\/abbr> Executive Director J.N. Musto. &ldquo;This truly represents an extraordinarily generous act by David, and an expression of collaboration involving the botany department, the dean and the union.\u200b&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Ruth Lani Stemmermann earner her bachelor&#8217;s degree from the Pitzer College in Claremont, California and her master&#8217;s and doctorate degrees from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa. She was hired as an instructor and then as an assistant professor at <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College<\/a>, where she taught courses in plant ecology, biology and environmental sciences. She led the way with her combination of field-instruction and classroom teaching.<\/p>\n<p>Her passion for field work and love for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s vegetation and landscape motivated her as a researcher and advocate. She became a champion for plant protection and preservation when she became aware of the military&#8217;s destructive effects on Hawaiian plants in the Big Island&#8217;s  P&#333;hakuloa training area. Stemmermann lobbied for the survival of these rare plants by publicly citing the military for their disregard. The courts initially turned down her complaint, but through Stemmermann&#8217;s brave and persistent stance, the military eventually complied with her concerns.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24237\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24237\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/stemmermann-bigcheck.jpg\" alt=\"four people holding big check\" width=\"300\" height=\"215\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/stemmermann-bigcheck.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/stemmermann-bigcheck-260x186.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24237\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left, Donna Vuchinich, David Duffy, J.
