{"id":238457,"date":"2026-08-03T16:04:33","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T02:04:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=238457"},"modified":"2026-08-03T16:04:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T02:04:33","slug":"robot-rover-team-record-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2026\/08\/03\/robot-rover-team-record-year\/","title":{"rendered":"Robot rover team caps record year with international recognition"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/manoa-engineering-rose.jpg\" alt=\"Group of smiling people\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-238474\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/manoa-engineering-rose.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/manoa-engineering-rose-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/manoa-engineering-rose-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The University of <span lang=\"haw\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/teamrosehawaii.com\/\">Team Robotic Space Exploration<\/a> <abbr>(RoSE)<\/abbr> is celebrating one of the most successful years in the student engineering organization&#8217;s history after earning international recognition, competing on the world stage and expanding its portfolio of aerospace projects.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past spring and summer, the student-led team represented <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa at several 2026 events:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>University Rover Challenge World Finals (27th out of 116 teams) International Council on Systems Engineering <abbr>(INCOSE)<\/abbr> Foundation Excellence in Systems Engineering Award (finalist)<\/li>\n<li>Project PETAL at NASA&#8217;s Revolutionary Aerospace Systems Concepts\u2013Academic Linkage <abbr>(RASC-AL)<\/abbr> Forum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Our team has grown tremendously in size, number of projects and student ambition throughout the past year,&rdquo; said Micah Tajiri, project manager for the University Rover Challenge team. &ldquo;We&#8217;re proud to represent <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and excited to keep building on this momentum.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Competing among the world&#8217;s best<\/h2>\n<p>From May 27 to 30, Team RoSE competed at the University Rover Challenge World Finals at the Mars Desert Research Station in Hanksville, Utah.<\/p>\n<p>The team&#8217;s rover featured a robotic arm, autonomous navigation system, science payload and communications platform designed and built by students.<\/p>\n<p>The rover team&#8217;s work also earned recognition beyond the competition. Team <abbr>RoSE<\/abbr> was named one of just 13 finalists from more than 100 teams worldwide for the inaugural <abbr>INCOSE<\/abbr> Foundation Excellence in Systems Engineering Award, recognizing its systems engineering approach and performance during the competition.<\/p>\n<h2>Building Beyond the Rover<\/h2>\n<p>Team <abbr>RoSE<\/abbr>&#8216;s success extended beyond the rover program.<\/p>\n<p>Project PETAL was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2026\/06\/19\/project-petal\/\">selected as one of 14 finalists from more than 150 applicants nationwide for <abbr>NASA<\/abbr>&#8216;s <abbr>RASC-AL<\/abbr> Forum<\/a>, where students presented a scalable lunar power management and distribution system to <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> engineers and industry professionals.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/manoa-engineering-rose-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"team with the rover\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-238473\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/manoa-engineering-rose-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/manoa-engineering-rose-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/manoa-engineering-rose-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>Project PETAL became the first multi-campus student-led engineering project involving students from <abbr>UH<\/abbr><abbr> M\u0101noa and <\/abbr><abbr>UH<\/abbr><abbr> Hilo, while the organization established new business and marketing training opportunities for students.<\/abbr><\/p>\n<p>Team <abbr>RoSE<\/abbr> also completed the latest iteration of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Advanced Balloon Satellite, which now features autonomous recovery capabilities, and launched CapM74, a new student project focused on developing a low-cost astrophotography telescope in partnership with the Institute for Astronomy.<\/p>\n<p>Team <abbr>RoSE<\/abbr> is one of more than 20 <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/uh-vip\/vip-teams\/\">vertically integrated projects<\/a> <abbr>(VIP)<\/abbr> housed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/engineering\/\">College of Engineering<\/a>. <abbr>VIP<\/abbr>s connect undergraduate students with faculty-led research teams, giving students hands-on experience through long-term, project-based work alongside graduate researchers and faculty mentors.<\/p>\n<p>The team&#8217;s work is supported by the College of Engineering and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spacegrant.hawaii.edu\/\"><span lang=\"haw\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Space Grant Consortium<\/a>, whose support helps provide students with opportunities to design, build and compete on national and international
