New research from oceanographers at the University of <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at <span lang=\"haw\">M&#257;noa<\/span> used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-026-47781-3\">high-resolution modeling that includes small-scale processes to examine projected heat stress on coral reefs<\/a> over the 21st century. Comparing this heat stress to previous estimates of the rate at which corals may adapt to changing conditions, the authors found that Hawaiian corals have the possibility of adapting to future heat stress, even under a high emissions scenario.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our research shows that Hawaiian corals may be exposed to unprecedented human-induced heat stress in the coming decades,&rdquo; said Kate Feloy, lead author of the study, who conducted this work as part of her doctoral research in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/\">Department of Oceanography<\/a> in the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> <span lang=\"haw\">M&#257;noa<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>). &ldquo;However, our results also provide some surprising hope that Hawaiian corals may be able to adapt to increasing temperatures.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_238051\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-238051\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/manoa-soest-coral-stress-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"coral\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-238051\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/manoa-soest-coral-stress-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/manoa-soest-coral-stress-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/manoa-soest-coral-stress-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-238051\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bleached Acropora corals at eastern French Frigate Shoals. The modeling approach accounts for small-scale processes and can reveal important spatial patterns in local warming. This is the first time this type of high-resolution climate projection has been used to assess future heat stress around the main Hawaiian islands.<\/p>\n<h2>Differences across the island chain<\/h2>\n<p>Coral reefs have high cultural and economic value and are a critical source of food and coastal protection in <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½.<\/span> This study provides projected heat stress not just for the region as a whole but examines differences across and between individual islands. The team\u2019s results show that not all coastal locations are projected to experience human-induced climate change at the same rate. They found that corals around <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island are projected to experience higher heat stress than the other islands.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The differences in warming are caused by complex ocean dynamics on small spatial scales in the waters around <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½,&rdquo;<\/span> Feloy said. &ldquo;These dynamics change the spatial patterns of human-induced coastal warming.
