The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant College Program<\/a> (Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant) has been awarded approximately $2.4 million in federal funding to advance island sustainability, protect unique marine ecosystems, support research, and develop a robust blue economy workforce. The funding is part of a continued, bipartisan investment by the U.S.<\/abbr> Congress to extend the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant funding through 2026.<\/p>\n

While the program operates as a federal-university partnership across 34 university-based programs nationwide<\/a>, this localized funding ensures Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> can continue to address the accelerating environmental and economic challenges specific to island communities.<\/p>\n

“We are deeply grateful to the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Congressional Delegation and the bipartisan coalition in Congress for their continued investment in the National Sea Grant College Program and in the communities we have served for nearly 60 years across Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific,” said Darren T. Lerner, Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant director. “This support strengthens Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant\u2019s ability to connect university research, community knowledge, and on-the-ground action to address coastal hazards, restore ecosystems, support sustainable seafood and aquaculture, and prepare the next generation of ocean and coastal leaders.”<\/p>\n

Congressional support for local initiatives<\/h2>\n

U.S.<\/abbr> Sen. Brian Schatz played a pivotal role in the reauthorization and amendment of the National Sea Grant College Program Act in 2020.<\/p>\n

“Sea Grant does incredibly important work, including promoting adaptation to king tides in Waikīkī,<\/span> fighting to save corals, and leading community-based stewardship of land and ocean across the state,” said Schatz. “We\u2019re going to continue working to deliver more funding so that Sea Grant can keep building a more resilient Â鶹´«Ã½.”<\/span><\/p>\n

U.S.<\/abbr> Rep. Ed Case emphasized that this funding is a critical safeguard for the state\u2019s future, particularly as we face extreme disasters.<\/p>\n

“In these uncertain times, we must redouble our efforts to support all those working to preserve and protect our coastal and marine ecosystems like our University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant College Program,” said Case. “Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant is a prime example of focus over decades on critical issues related to sustainable coastal development, tourism, hazard resiliency, sustainable aquaculture, Indigenous knowledge, and the impacts of climate change.”<\/p>\n

Building a resilient future<\/h2>\n

With this $2.4 million allocation, Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant will continue to bridge the gap between academic research and community action. By securing these funds, the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Congressional Delegation has ensured that the state\u2019s coastal communities remain vibrant, sustainable and prepared for the challenges of the 21st century.<\/p>\n
