It will also strengthen a program that generates statewide pride, visibility and meaningful economic impact for <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The five contributors, each committing $200,000 annually for five years, are Bank of <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, First Hawaiian Bank, Matson, and longtime <abbr>UH<\/abbr> supporters and community leaders Jack Tsui and Walter Dods.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This extraordinary commitment reflects something that has always made <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> special: people who deeply believe in <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and understand the important role athletics plays in bringing our community together,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <span lang=\"haw\">M&#257;noa<\/span> Director of Athletics Matt Elliott. &ldquo;College athletics has changed, and our objective is to adapt in a way that reflects the values of this university and our state. University leaders estimate <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <span lang=\"haw\">M&#257;noa<\/span> needs approximately $5 million annually in <abbr>NIL<\/abbr> support to remain competitive in the Mountain West and on the national stage.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Athletics has united <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> communities during moments of triumph in just the last year&#8212;from the men\u2019s volleyball national championship and men\u2019s basketball\u2019s return to the <abbr title=\"National Collegiate Athletics Association\">NCAA<\/abbr> Tournament after winning the Big West title, to football\u2019s thrilling <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Bowl victory over Cal before a sold-out crowd at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex and a national television audience that peaked at 3 million viewers.<\/p>\n<p>University leaders say those moments of shared pride underscore the broader value athletics brings to <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>: creating connection, visibility and economic impact beyond campus. A 2015 study by the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <span lang=\"haw\">M&#257;noa<\/span> Shidler College of Business, based on a $35 million athletics budget at the time, found <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Athletics generated $66 million in direct spending, produced $128 million in statewide business sales, generated approximately $7 million in tax revenue and supported more than 860 jobs across <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. We understand the pressures on the Legislature and that everyone is asking for support.
