Leading the way was geology (<abbr title=\"Number\">No<\/abbr>. 19 in the U.S. and <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 51&#8211;100 in the world), geophysics (<abbr>No<\/abbr>. 19 in the U.S. and <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 51&#8211;100 in the world), Earth and marine sciences (<abbr>No<\/abbr>. 21 in the U.S. and <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 51&#8211;100 in the world) and linguistics (<abbr>No<\/abbr>. 22 in the U.S. and <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 61 in the world).<\/p>\n<p>Ten additional subjects placed in the world\u2019s top 2&#37; (within top 500 in the world out of <a href=\"https:\/\/research.com\/universities-colleges\/university-statistics\">more than 25,000 colleges and universities worldwide<\/a>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>English language and literature: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 28 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 101&#8211;150 world<\/li>\n<li>Agriculture and forestry: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 30 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 151&#8211;200 world<\/li>\n<li>Anthropology: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 31 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 101&#8211;200 world<\/li>\n<li>Modern languages: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 41 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 251&#8211;300 world<\/li>\n<li>Environmental sciences: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 66 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 351&#8211;400 world<\/li>\n<li>Communication and media studies: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 68 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 251&#8211;275 world<\/li>\n<li>Physics and astronomy: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 70 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 401&#8211;450 world<\/li>\n<li>Education: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 78 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 351&#8211;400 world<\/li>\n<li>Medicine: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 99 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 451&#8211;500 world<\/li>\n<li>Biological sciences: <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 100 U.S., <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 451&#8211;500 world<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;These rankings highlight the exceptional work and commitment of our faculty, students and staff,&rdquo; <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> <span lang=\"haw\">M&#257;noa<\/span> Interim Provost Vassilis L. Syrmos said. &ldquo;They showcase the university\u2019s global standing and reinforce that <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <span lang=\"haw\">M&#257;noa<\/span> offers outstanding educational opportunities and experiences for both our local community and those joining us from around the world.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> <span lang=\"haw\">M&#257;noa<\/span> was ranked in three broad subject areas and 14 narrow subject areas.
