The hands-on initiative, based at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Maui College, builds 8-by-10-foot portable sheds that are small enough to be delivered to landowners without construction permits.<\/p>\n<h2>Real relief<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_230846\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-230846\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/maui-lahaina-sheds-2-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"front view of shed\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-230846\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/maui-lahaina-sheds-2-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/maui-lahaina-sheds-2-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/maui-lahaina-sheds-2.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-230846\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This was the 50th shed delivered to a Lahaina homeowner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These sheds, which double as teaching tools for participants, provide essential storage and, for some, temporary shelter. To date, 58 sheds have been delivered, with 220 households still on a waiting list.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is a way for people to feel safe and regain a sense of stability,&rdquo; said Moani Whittle-Wagner, an academic support specialist who named the project. &ldquo;Drivers are often greeted with hugs and tears. They\u2019re small structures, but the relief is real.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.givecampus.com\/campaigns\/75080\/donations\/new?\">early Giving Day donation<\/a> helps ensure Lahaina residents and displaced families have the skills and materials they need to regain a sense of stability. Lahaina resident Gene Castillo, whose family lost multiple homes, found both skills and a forward focus in the program, recalling the evacuation with his then-pregnant wife and young daughter.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/uh-giving-day\/\">Read more <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Giving Day stories<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Without her,&rdquo; he said gesturing toward his now two-year-old daughter Zanel, &ldquo;I think we would have been lost. She gave us something to look forward to.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Hale <span lang=\"haw\">P\u0101pa&#699;i<\/span> is also rebuilding lives by offering pathways into the trades, bringing together credit courses, union apprenticeships and free community classes.
