Collaborations like this remain uncommon in Hawaiian music, even as hula has flourished in Japan for decades, with an estimated two million dancers nationwide.<\/p>\n<h2>Modern mele <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_223789\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-223789\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hilo-music-education-lum-pewa.jpg\" alt=\"Black and white album cover\" width=\"214\" height=\"214\" class=\"size-full wp-image-223789\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hilo-music-education-lum-pewa.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hilo-music-education-lum-pewa-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-223789\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lum\u2019s debut album, &ldquo;Pewa&rdquo;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lum developed <em>Waik&#299;k&#299;<\/em> through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.olelo.hawaii.edu\/haawinakala\/makuakane\">Daniel and Lydia Makuak&#257;ne Endowed Scholarship and Fellowship<\/a>, which supports his ongoing creative research following his 2023 debut album <em>Pewa<\/em>. He grew up dancing in Japan under the guidance of Kahikina Ah Sing and his brother Kalani, who grew up in Kona and opened Ke Ala O Ke Ao Cultural Arts Studio, their h&#257;lau in Japan, more than 20 years ago. Through the h&#257;lau, <span lang=\"haw\">No&#699;eau<\/span> has been learning \u02bb\u014dlelo <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, with a strong focus on accuracy and understanding.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This song taught me a lot.
