A $51,813 grant from the Walmart Foundation’s Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> State Giving Council<\/a> funded the purchase of a new mobile health van. John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (JABSOM<\/abbr>) faculty and students use the van to provide free medical clinics and outreach services weekly for the homeless in Kakaʻako<\/span>, Honolulu, Waiʻanae<\/span> and Kalaeloa.<\/p>\n

Ray Griego, store manager for the downtown Honolulu Walmart<\/a> (scheduled to open in summer 2014), joined Jill Omori<\/strong>, associate professor of JABSOM<\/abbr>’s Family Medicine and Community Health department<\/a>, and medical students in Kakaʻako<\/span> to see the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Homeless Outreach and Medical Education (H.O.M.E.<\/abbr>) project in action.<\/p>\n

JABSOM<\/abbr> Dean Jerris Hedges<\/strong> said, “We are very grateful to the Walmart Foundation for the H.O.M.E<\/abbr>. project’s new mobile health van. This program is truly a win-win for our community.” Hedges continued, “Our unsheltered homeless receive much needed medical assistance while our faculty and medical students learn valuable skills in working with an under-served population.”<\/p>\n
