The three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, <abbr>D.C.<\/abbr>, along with a mobile education center, served as a powerful gathering space for the community to learn, remember and share.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/west-oahu-vietnam-wall-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Two keiki at the wall\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-228631\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/west-oahu-vietnam-wall-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/west-oahu-vietnam-wall-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/west-oahu-vietnam-wall-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>The Wall That Heals<\/em>, a program of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (<abbr>VVMF<\/abbr>), honors the more than three million Americans who served in the Vietnam War and bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.<\/p>\n<p>Ken Inouye, assistant to the vice chancellor for administration at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span lang=\"haw\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, was part of the team that helped bring the exhibit to campus and found the experience deeply moving. Inouye, who served in the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> Army\u2019s 442nd Regimental Combat Team, one of the most decorated military units in <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> history.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;A woman and her husband approached me to ask for directions and then started talking to me about the Wall,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;After about five minutes of us talking about family members who had served in the military, she realized that her uncle and my father had served together in World War <abbr title=\"two\">II<\/abbr>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 400 volunteers and more than 20 community partners contributed to the event. The display at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span lang=\"haw\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> was the first stop of the <abbr>VVMF<\/abbr>\u2019s 2026 <em>The Wall That Heals<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vvmf.org\/The-Wall-That-Heals\/2026-The-Wall-That-Heals-Tour-Schedule\/\">national tour<\/a>.
