Designed to be one the many components that constitute a &ldquo;common standard of care&rdquo; for <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> students systemwide, the chatbots, with names like \u2018Bow and Moa, are demonstrating high participation with a 94&#37; opt-in rate, and are earning gratitude from the people who matter most: the students.<\/p>\n[vc_video link=&#8221;https:\/\/youtube.com\/shorts\/ezEh59H5unY&#8221; el_aspect=&#8221;916&#8243; align=&#8221;right&#8221; el_id=&#8221;wrap-video-right&#8221;]\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> students are embracing their digital &ldquo;buddies&rdquo; with enthusiasm, according to the EdSights fall 2025 report. They shared heartfelt messages such as, &ldquo;thank you so much for your support throughout the semester,&rdquo; and &ldquo;I appreciate your help!&rdquo; More informal student texts included, &ldquo;Thanks dawg&rdquo; and &ldquo;thanks king.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Strong student engagement<\/h2>\n<p>Between August 1 and December 10, 2025, students across the state sent a total of 72,089 texts to their respective campus chatbots, such as <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s Lehua and <span lang=\"haw\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>\u2019s Koa. Engagement was particularly strong at Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> (Niu) and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span lang=\"haw\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> (Pueo), where student engagement rates reached 62&#37; and 61&#37;, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our <abbr>AI<\/abbr> chatbots have become more than just digital tools for academic success; they are a 24\/7 support system that ensures no student at the University of <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> feels alone,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President Wendy Hensel. &ldquo;By providing immediate answers and identifying those who need a human touch, we are meeting students exactly where they are&#8212;on their phones&#8212;and ensuring their path to graduation is clearer than ever before.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Saving time, scaling support<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/system-uh-ai-chatbots-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"student looking at phone\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-228082\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/system-uh-ai-chatbots-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/system-uh-ai-chatbots-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/system-uh-ai-chatbots-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The chatbots have proven to be an efficient resource for both students and staff. The <abbr>AI<\/abbr> tool answered 4,294 student questions without any human intervention, saving staff approximately 357 hours. When students require deeper support, the system acts as a bridge; the bots facilitated 5,554 automatic connections to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> resources and flagged 2,533 students for direct staff follow-up.<\/p>\n<p>The bots also initiate conversations at key points to gauge well-being.
