Shim<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Walton K.T. Shim, <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s first pediatric surgeon and a longtime professor of surgery and pediatrics at the University of <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa <a href=\"http:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>), died in November 2025 at his family home in Montana. He was 94.<\/p>\n<p>Over the span of his long career, he trained residents, mentored future surgeons and helped raise the standard of pediatric care statewide.<\/p>\n<p>Born and raised in <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, Shim attended Dartmouth College and Columbia University School of Medicine before completing surgical training in Chicago. Shim returned to <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> in 1967 determined to build pediatric surgery as a specialty so children could receive complex care without leaving the islands. For many years, he was the only pediatric surgeon statewide.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to his faculty role at <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>, Shim held multiple leadership positions at <span lang=\"haw\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Medical Center for Women &#38; Children, including division chief of pediatric surgery and chief of staff. He was also a founding member of the Pacific Association of Pediatric Surgeons.<\/p>\n<h2>A doctor who never delayed<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_228021\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-228021\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/manoa-jabsom-walton-shim-family-300x169.png\" alt=\"shim family photo\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-228021\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/manoa-jabsom-walton-shim-family-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/manoa-jabsom-walton-shim-family-130x73.png 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/manoa-jabsom-walton-shim-family.png 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-228021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Shim Family<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;There\u2019s all sorts of ways you can delay seeing patients,&rdquo; said his wife, Vicki Shim. &ldquo;He never did that.
