{"id":227779,"date":"2026-01-04T08:00:35","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T18:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=227779"},"modified":"2025-12-31T12:41:01","modified_gmt":"2025-12-31T22:41:01","slug":"gras-ranking-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2026\/01\/04\/gras-ranking-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa ranks top 12 in U.S. for oceanography, atmospheric science, tourism"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-gras-academic-subject-rankings.jpg\" alt=\"three students sitting on a bench\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-227780\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-gras-academic-subject-rankings.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-gras-academic-subject-rankings-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-gras-academic-subject-rankings-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span lang=\"haw\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> earned high marks in nearly 20 academic subjects in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shanghairanking.com\/rankings\/gras\/2025\">2025 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects<\/a>, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/\">oceanography<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/atmo\/\">atmospheric science<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/shidler.hawaii.edu\/tim\">hospitality and tourism management<\/a> leading the way among the highest-ranked programs.<\/p>\n<p>Oceanography ranked <abbr title=\"Number\">No<\/abbr>. 5 in the U.S. and <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 7 in the world, atmospheric science placed <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 8 nationally and <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 11 worldwide, and hospitality and tourism management ranked <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 12 in the U.S. and <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 32 in the world.<\/p>\n<p>The rankings were released by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy and is considered one of the most comprehensive and objective assessments of university performance by discipline.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa also posted strong global and national placements across science, engineering, social science and other fields. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/earthsciences\/\">Earth sciences<\/a> tied for <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 17 in the U.S. and ranked <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 51&#8211;75 worldwide, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/eecb\/\">ecology<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/puba.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">public administration<\/a> each tied for <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 24 nationally and placed <abbr>No<\/abbr>. 76&#8211;100 globally.<\/p>\n<p>Additional <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa subjects recognized in the 2025 rankings include communication, education, political science, water resources, biological sciences, civil engineering, food science and technology, environmental science and engineering, agricultural sciences, economics, management and physics.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shanghairanking.com\/institution\/university-of-hawaii-at-manoa\">See <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s profile on the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy website<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;These rankings reflect the depth and consistency of excellence at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa,&rdquo; Interim Provost Vassilis L. Syrmos said. &ldquo;Our faculty are advancing research that matters locally and globally, while preparing students to address some of the most pressing challenges facing our world.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa was evaluated alongside approximately 2,000 universities from more than 100 countries and regions, selected from a global pool of more than 25,000 institutions.
