In the <em>Kumulipo<\/em>, k\u0101huli describes the transformation that warmed the earth and unfolded the heavens, catalyzing the formation of the universe itself.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;K\u0101huli speaks to transformation at a fundamental level\u2014not surface change, but the kind of shift that reorders everything,&rdquo; said <span lang=\"haw\">Ka&#699;iu<\/span> Kimura, director of the Hawaiian language college.<\/p>\n<p>This meaning resonates as we navigate change on multiple fronts: federal shutdowns affecting vulnerable <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;ohana<\/span>, rising costs reshaping island economies, climate disasters whose recovery continues across our communities. Political movements challenge unjust systems globally, while our communities grapple with the cost of simply remaining home.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The word k\u0101huli acknowledges that transformation can feel disruptive, but it\u2019s also how new worlds emerge,&rdquo; explained Kimura. &ldquo;We&#8217;re living through an era of k\u0101huli politically, environmentally and culturally.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2025\/09\/09\/uh-kumu-to-help-revive-kumulipo\/\">In a year where the <em>Kumulipo<\/em> again resounded across its homeland<\/a>, k\u0101huli reminds us that transformation is both inevitable and essential.
