The items are provided through partnerships with the <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Foodbank and the <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Health &#38; Harm Reduction Center.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They exemplify the qualities of empathy, responsiveness, commitment and are fearless of the physical labor involved with the work of helping provide food to those in need but often go unacknowledged,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Their unconditional assistance makes these events possible.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_226510\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-226510\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-bradshaw-richard-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Richard Bradshaw\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-226510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-bradshaw-richard-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-bradshaw-richard-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-bradshaw-richard.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-226510\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Richard Bradshaw<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Finding joy in helping others<\/h2>\n<p>Richard Bradshaw, one of <abbr>FVH<\/abbr>\u2019s longest-serving volunteers and a former religion instructor, said he returns each month for a simple reason: helping others brings joy.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think helping others with an open heart and non-judgmentally enables me to doubly enjoy giving,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;Making people happy is the best way to make yourself happy.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>His own experiences as a college student gives him perspective on the challenges many students face today. He recalled comforting a student he knew who felt embarrassed to see him at the Food Drop, an interaction that underscored how food insecurity can affect a student\u2019s sense of dignity.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I deeply understood how she felt and did everything I could to ease her feelings,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_226509\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-226509\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-hackney-lara-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Lara Hackney headshot\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-226509\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-hackney-lara-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-hackney-lara-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-hackney-lara.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-226509\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lara Hackney<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Connecting through food and knowledge<\/h2>\n<p>Lara Hackney is an instructor in the Food Science and Human Nutrition program in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>She began volunteering with <abbr>FVH<\/abbr> in 2019 through her involvement with The Coalition to Stop Campus Hunger. After the pandemic, she returned and has volunteered consistently since.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I hope they [students\/<abbr>UH<\/abbr> community] feel that <abbr>FVH<\/abbr> is a safe place where they can find something that helps when times are challenging,&rdquo; she said.<\/p>\n<h2>A new volunteer inspired to give back<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-wagner-stephen-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-226511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-wagner-stephen-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-wagner-stephen-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-wagner-stephen.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For third-year physics major Stephen Wagner, volunteering began as part of his Mortar Board service project but quickly took on deeper meaning. With past experience at food banks on <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, he recognized how essential <abbr>FVH<\/abbr> is\u2014especially after learning that 84&#37; of the 268 participants at a recent Food Drop identified as <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Seeing the pallets of food empty as people came through made the impact very tangible,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I hope students feel secure and welcome when they come to the Food Drop.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>He encourages others to volunteer as well. &ldquo;Community is especially important in these uncertain times, and lifting each other up makes for a strong community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>How to support <abbr>FVH<\/abbr><\/h2>\n<p><abbr>FVH<\/abbr> will hold its next Food Drop on December 10, at the Campus Center Courtyard, beginning at noon while supplies last. Its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/calendar\/manoa\/2025\/10\/31\/44773.html?ed_id=58305\">Holiday Drive<\/a> to help stock its pantry in Hemenway Hall runs through January 2, and the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> community is encouraged to donate non-perishable food items and toiletries at the <abbr>SLD<\/abbr> office in Campus Center Room 208, Monday&#8212;Friday, 9 a.m.&#8212;4 p.m. (except holidays and weekends).<\/p>\n<p>Monetary donations to support Food Vault <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> can be made through the <a href=\"https:\/\/give.uhfoundation.org\/campaigns\/63435\/donations\/new?utm_medium=redirect&#038;designation_id=12909704&#038;utm_campaign=appeal\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation<\/a>.
