  {"id":226446,"date":"2025-12-04T13:31:35","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T23:31:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=226446"},"modified":"2025-12-04T13:31:35","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T23:31:35","slug":"hawaii-annual-code-challenge-sweep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2025\/12\/04\/hawaii-annual-code-challenge-sweep\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa sweeps college division at Hawai\u2018i Annual Code Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-coding-challenge.jpg\" alt=\"10th annual coding challenge.\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-226455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-coding-challenge.jpg 676w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-coding-challenge-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-coding-challenge-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Three University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa teams were among nine honored as winners of the 10th Annual <a href=\"https:\/\/hacc.hawaii.gov\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Annual Code Challenge<\/a> (<abbr>HACC<\/abbr>), held on November 22 at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West <span lang=\"haw\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The event, organized by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/ets.hawaii.gov\"><span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Office of Enterprise Technology Services<\/a> (<abbr>ETS<\/abbr>), brought together students, amateurs and professionals to develop solutions for real government and community needs.<\/p>\n<p>College division winners:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>OPEN TO WORK (<abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa), led by Junle Yan, for the <abbr>ETS<\/abbr> Project Review App<\/li>\n<li>Nintendo <abbr>DS<\/abbr> (<abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa), led by Samantha Limon, for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Pathfinder <abbr title=\"Artificial Intelligence\">AI<\/abbr><\/li>\n<li>3 Lil Minions (<abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa), led by Lionel Derrick Roxas, for Department of Human Resources Development\u2019s <abbr>AI<\/abbr> Screener<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Finalists presented projects addressing four challenges from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and state partner agencies: an <abbr>UH<\/abbr> screening tool for job applicants, a standardized <abbr>IT<\/abbr> project review platform, <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s <abbr>HR<\/abbr> Navigator and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Pathfinder <abbr>AI<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 120 attendees watched teams showcase applications focused on improving hiring processes, modernizing government tech systems and helping students navigate academic and career pathways. A total of $18,000 in prizes was awarded across high school, college and professional divisions.<\/p>\n<p><abbr title=\"Lieutenant\">Lt.<\/abbr> <abbr title=\"Governor\">Gov.<\/abbr> Sylvia Luke praised participants for applying creativity to issues that affect <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> residents daily, emphasizing the challenge\u2019s role in inspiring the next generation of innovators.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Over the past 10 years, the <abbr>HACC<\/abbr> has shown how creativity and technology can directly improve the lives of <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s people,&rdquo; Luke said. &ldquo;Seeing these students and young professionals tackle real government challenges gives me tremendous hope for the future.
