The four-month review will result in a customized &ldquo;playbook&rdquo; with clear, research-based steps to improve retention, close student outcome gaps and raise graduation rates.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This work gives our campuses the clarity and data they need to strengthen what\u2019s working and enhance the areas where students need more support,&rdquo; said Kim Siegenthaler, Senior Advisor to the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President. &ldquo;When we remove friction for students and surround them with consistent support, we open more doors for them to stay on track, finish strong, and move into the future they\u2019ve worked so hard for.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Proven results<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/honolulu-campus-gnrc-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Honolulu C C campus\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-68034\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/honolulu-campus-gnrc-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/honolulu-campus-gnrc-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/honolulu-campus-gnrc.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><abbr>NISS<\/abbr>\u2019 track record shows what\u2019s possible. At Georgia State University, its strategies cut &ldquo;summer melt&rdquo; (students who are accepted to college but don\u2019t show up) in half. Other institutions that partnered with <abbr>NISS<\/abbr> have seen double-digit gains in first-year retention, and increases in graduation rates by more than 15 percentage points.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo serves a unique population, many first-generation college students balancing work and family,&rdquo; said Bonnie Irwin, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Chancellor.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>NISS<\/abbr> will help us identify where our systems may be inadvertently creating roadblocks and give us the tools to clear those paths so more students can reach graduation.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Strengthening support<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hilo-campus-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"hilo campus\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-90286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hilo-campus-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hilo-campus-630x353.jpg 630w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/hilo-campus.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When the <abbr>NISS<\/abbr> review ends, campuses can start implementing the recommendations. Some changes can be made right away, while others, such as updating advising structures, improving early alerts, redesigning high-failure courses and standardizing communication tools, will require broader coordination with faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p>The effort centers on building proactive, consistent support so students don\u2019t have to depend on chance or the &ldquo;right&rdquo; office.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Everything we do at Honolulu Community College comes back to one thing &#8211; helping our students succeed,\u201d said Karen C. Lee, Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Chancellor. &ldquo;What excites us about the <abbr>NISS<\/abbr> partnership is the chance to step back, look at our work with fresh eyes, and strengthen the systems that guide our students every day.
