The installation, which had been on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2025\/02\/14\/historic-native-hawaiian-art-honolulu-hale\/\">display earlier this year<\/a> at Honolulu Hale and Kapolei Hale, was unveiled at <span lang=\"haw\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Moku in November at a community welcome event.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_226202\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-226202\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/leeward-waianae-moku-umeke-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Woman singing and playing ukulele\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-226202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/leeward-waianae-moku-umeke-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/leeward-waianae-moku-umeke-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/leeward-waianae-moku-umeke-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-226202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The public is invited to view <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;Umeke<\/span> <span lang=\"haw\">L\u0101&#699;au<\/span> at the <span lang=\"haw\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Moku Educaton Center.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Part of the <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Triennial 2025: Aloha N\u014d, <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;Umeke<\/span> <span lang=\"haw\">L\u0101&#699;au<\/span> is a massive 22-foot-wide, eight-foot-tall installation created by artist Meleanna Aluli Meyer, in collaboration with &lsquo;Team <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;Umeke<\/span>&rsquo;: Honolulu Community College carpentry students, <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa art faculty and students, and community kokua (help). The work reimagines the traditional <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;umeke<\/span>\u2014a wooden calabash bowl used for nourishment, water and sacred offerings\u2014as a space for reflection, healing, repair and connection.<\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"haw\">&#699;Umeke<\/span> <span lang=\"haw\">L\u0101&#699;au<\/span> will be on display at <span lang=\"haw\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Moku before moving on to Maui in January 2026. Hours are Monday through Thursday 8 a.m.\u20138 p.m. and Friday 8 a.m.\u20134 p.m. <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/15msjqqZ-8AaB_RAnAsf8uhjHOKIbQkeLgBfgFEIC6sA\/viewform?edit_requested=true\">Reservation requests must be made in advance<\/a>.
