The annual event, hosted by the Department of <a href=\"https:\/\/eall.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">East Asian Languages and Literatures<\/a> (<abbr>EALL<\/abbr>), offered a full day of hands-on activities highlighting Japanese language, art and community traditions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_226183\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-226183\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-eall-nippon-day-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Attendees surrounding a koto\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-226183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-eall-nippon-day-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-eall-nippon-day-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-eall-nippon-day-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-226183\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Attendees get a close look at the traditional Japanese koto.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Attendees moved from table to table, trying everything from calligraphy and gift-wrapping to traditional Japanese card games such as <em>hanafuda<\/em> and <em>karuta<\/em>. Students practiced <em>koto<\/em> (Japanese string instrument) and <em>sanshin<\/em> (Okinawan string instrument), folded intricate <em>origami<\/em> and tested their skills at <em>manga<\/em> (comic book) character drawing and <em>katakana<\/em> (character) recognition game. Members of the Japanese Culture Club also supported a station, helping guests of all ages jump in.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our department has long been engaged in the study of Japan,&rdquo; said Hiromi Uchida, a Japanese language instructor. &ldquo;We see this event as a valuable opportunity for both learning and community building, and we hope to continue making Nippon Culture Day an exciting and enjoyable experience for all students and the community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Traditions up close<\/h2>\n<p>Nippon is the Japanese word for Japan. Culture-focused workshops ran throughout the morning and afternoon. Visitors sat for abacus lessons, learned the basics of ikebana (flower arrangement) in small-group sessions and experienced the quiet focus of a tea ceremony inside Jaku\u2019an, the campus tea house.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_226184\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-226184\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-eall-nippon-day-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Group of boys playing cards\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-226184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-eall-nippon-day-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-eall-nippon-day-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/manoa-eall-nippon-day-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-226184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Participants dove into a variety of hands-on activities.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Information tables connected students with academic and professional opportunities tied to Japan. Representatives from <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/okinawa\/wordpress\/\">Center for Okinawan Studies<\/a> (<abbr>COS<\/abbr>), <a href=\"https:\/\/nflrc.hawaii.edu\/languageroadmap\/\"><span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Language-Roadmap Initiative<\/a>, Japanese Exchange and Teaching Program and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.studyabroad.hawaii.edu\/\">Study Abroad Center<\/a> spoke with attendees about travel and study opportunities. Japan Airlines also provided details about career tracks.<\/p>\n<p>As the afternoon continued, the event shifted to live performances featuring koto and sanshin demonstrations. The day ended with a bon dance, inviting everyone to celebrate together.<\/p>\n<p>Nippon Culture Day is co-sponsored by the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/japanese-studies\/\">Center for Japanese Studies<\/a> and <abbr>COS<\/abbr>.
