The center is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/law.hawaii.edu\/\">William S. Richardson School of Law<\/a> at the University of <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa.<\/p>\n<p>In recognition of this milestone, Councilmember Esther <span lang=\"haw\">Kia&#699;&#257;ina<\/span>, on behalf of the Honolulu City Council, presented an honorary certificate to Ka Huli Ao at Honolulu Hale. The presentation honored the center\u2019s enduring contributions to Native Hawaiian legal education and community engagement.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-native-hawaiian-law-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"group shot\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-225932\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-native-hawaiian-law-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-native-hawaiian-law-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/manoa-native-hawaiian-law.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Ka Huli Ao is grateful to the Honolulu City Council for this tremendous honor, which is a reflection on Chief Justice William S. Richardson\u2019s enduring legal legacy to <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and our people,&rdquo; said <span lang=\"haw\">Kapua&#699;ala<\/span> Sproat, director of Ka Huli Ao and professor of law. &ldquo;Ua Ao <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>! In Ka Huli Ao\u2019s 20th year, this guiding theme reminds us that even in our most challenging moments, the path forward is illuminated by <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s enduring legal foundations, grounded in loina (customs, principles, laws) and <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;ike<\/span> <span lang=\"haw\">ku&#699;una<\/span> (ancestral knowledge), which continue to guide us toward the light of tomorrow.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2005 by Professor Melody Kapilialoha MacKenzie through a Native Hawaiian Education Act grant, Ka Huli Ao has become a cornerstone of Native Hawaiian law.
