That was an &lsquo;aha&rsquo; moment for me: realizing that I could channel my deep care and interest in the environment into a career.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_224628\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-224628\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-soest-lauryn-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"person picking up trash\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-224628\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-soest-lauryn-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-soest-lauryn-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-soest-lauryn.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-224628\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hansen assisting with a beach clean-up.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That realization led Hansen, who grew up in California and the Pacific Northwest, to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa. She enrolled in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/ges\/\">Global Environmental Sciences<\/a> (<abbr>GES<\/abbr>) bachelor&rsquo;s degree program in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a> (<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n<p>For her <abbr>GES<\/abbr> senior thesis, Hansen worked with Robert Richmond at the Kewalo Marine Laboratory to investigate how exposure to <abbr>PFAS<\/abbr>, a type of &ldquo;forever chemical,&rdquo; influenced different phases of the coral life cycle. This project sparked a strong interest in toxicology and contamination, which ultimately steered her toward pursuing a bachelor&rsquo;s and master&rsquo;s (<abbr>BAM<\/abbr>) combined degree in public health at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The transition to public health ended up being a really natural fit,&rdquo; Hansen said.<\/p>\n<h2>Linking research and community<\/h2>\n<p>Now, as an <a href=\"https:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/about\/opportunities\/#1742578509270-d2da2b83-4f8f\">E. Gordon Grau Fellow<\/a> with the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Sea Grant College Program (<span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant), Hansen is focusing on coastal marine resource management related to contaminants of emerging concern, such as forever chemicals, pesticides and microplastics. She collaborates with researchers, water quality managers and government agencies to improve local monitoring and management of these contaminants.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to her research, Hansen contributes to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa&rsquo;s efforts to become a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning.
