Security, custodial, grounds and maintenance employees from Kapiʻolani<\/span> Community College discovered fresh inspiration and teamwork during a first-of-its-kind professional retreat hosted by The Kahala Hotel & Resort. The engaging, hands-on sessions aimed to strengthen pride, confidence and connection by showing how the resort cultivates excellence through a culture of respect and aloha.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m thankful for this opportunity,” said Alan Yoshimoto, Kapiʻolani<\/span> CC<\/abbr> groundskeeper. “It was a good training and a great reminder of the importance of the work we do and the qualities we bring to our campus. It was helpful to see how The Kahala puts values like teamwork, reliability and service into practice.”<\/p>\n

Chancellor Misaki Takabayashi said the retreat was part of upholding kuleana (responsibility) to the campus community and strengthening student success.<\/p>\n

“This marks the first time our campus has dedicated a professional development experience specifically for our operations and maintenance teams,” she said. “Their work is vital to the safety, beauty and daily operations of our campus. Investing in their growth and well-being helps us achieve one of our Campus Â鶹´«Ã½ priorities of maintaining a thriving and sustainable campus.”<\/p>\n

Employees participated in reflective activities highlighting The Kahala\u2019s blend of hospitality, professionalism and aloha. Each was encouraged to identify personal strengths and apply at least two best practices to their campus work.<\/p>\n

“I learned about respect, pride and being one ʻohana<\/span> (family),” said Mel Akiwo, a groundskeeper. “It reminded me to take pride in our work. We all have a part in creating a positive environment.”<\/p>\n

The day featured presentations on The Kahala\u2019s service culture, a lei-making activity on workplace values and a guided tour showcasing operational excellence.<\/p>\n

“This experience reminds us that what we do matters,” said Kapiʻolani<\/span> CC<\/abbr> Security Manager Wayne Fredericks. “We look forward to taking lessons back to our campus and continue creating a workplace where everyone is valued.”<\/p>\n
