Blaisdell Concert Hall on October 23. The free concert captivated audiences by weaving together <span lang=\"haw\">mo&#699;olelo<\/span> (storytelling), mele (music), hula and animations.<\/p>\n<p>The performance featured <abbr>HSO<\/abbr> performing ocean-themed original compositions by celebrated local composers Michael-Thomas Foumai, Herb Mahelona, Takuma Itoh, Logyn Okuda and Justin Park. The music was paired with vibrant animations by Kari Noe, Janae Taclas, Dillon Valenzuela, Jewel Racasa, Sam St. John, Edward Ayano, Napua Rice, Huy Nguyen and Kieren McKee.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-seagrant-Symphony5-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"conductor\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-224279\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-seagrant-Symphony5-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-seagrant-Symphony5-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-seagrant-Symphony5.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have the research at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, and we have the finest musicians, world class orchestra, and when we combine those together, we have a powerful message to send to the world using music that goes straight to the heart,&rdquo; said Foumai, the director of artistic engagement for <abbr>HSO<\/abbr> and also a lecturer at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>&#8211;West <span lang=\"haw\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The program also included a mele composed by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Professor Rosie Alegado and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Indigenous Stewardship Specialist Aimee Sato accompanying a hula under the guidance of Kumu Hula, Kekuhi <span lang=\"haw\">Keali&#699;ikanaka&#699;oleohaililani<\/span> and <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College Professor of Hawaiian Studies Taup&#333;uri Tangar&#333;. Cultural narratives guided audiences through time alongside native sea life and <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;aum&#257;kua<\/span> (family or personal gods), exploring the vital role humans play in protecting cherished waters.<\/p>\n<h2>School performances<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-seagrant-Symphony1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"hula\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-224275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-seagrant-Symphony1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-seagrant-Symphony1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-seagrant-Symphony1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Symphony of the <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Seas<\/em> featured two morning performances for students in grades 4&#8211;12. These free school concerts were designed to support STEAM learning, cultural literacy and environmental awareness in classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;And so it&#8217;s exciting to bring all of this talent together to provide an opportunity for our 4th and 12th grade students to be in a symphony, to be in a concert hall, and to get to see all of it in such an immersive experience,&rdquo; said Beth Lenz, <abbr title=\"doctor of philosophy\">PhD<\/abbr>, <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Sea Grant assistant director for strategic communications and engagement.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was my first time going to one of those kinds of events,&rdquo; said Brad Park, Papahana O Kaiona Alternative Learning Program sophomore. &ldquo;It was very peaceful, I had a peaceful feeling listening to the orchestra. And I liked how it kind of matched the vibe of the video, that&#8217;s what I liked.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Continuing the education through music<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-seagrant-Symphony2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"symphony with animation\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-224276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-seagrant-Symphony2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-seagrant-Symphony2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-seagrant-Symphony2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This performance continued the successes of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2020\/04\/07\/symphony-of-the-hawaiian-birds-online\/\"><em>Symphony of the Hawaiian Birds<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2023\/04\/26\/symphony-of-the-hawaii-forests\/\"><em>Symphony of <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Forests<\/em><\/a>.
