Researchers at University of <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.higp.hawaii.edu\/\"><span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Institute of Geophysics and Planetology<\/a> (<abbr>HIGP<\/abbr>) are leading new initiatives to advance materials science across the state.<\/p>\n<h2>Materials Science Consortium for Research and Education<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_223783\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-223783\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/system-materials-science-jubilee-lab-robot-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"two people testing a robot\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-223783\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/system-materials-science-jubilee-lab-robot-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/system-materials-science-jubilee-lab-robot-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/system-materials-science-jubilee-lab-robot.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-223783\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mechanical engineering graduate students Kailer Okura and Duke Vierra of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Nanosystems Lab inspect the construction and operation of a reconfigurable open-source Jubiliee lab robot that was updated by Vierra to improve adaptability to chemical experiments.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2017\/11\/13\/initiative-to-address-challenges-facing-hawaii-launches\/\">launched the Materials Science Consortium for Research and Education (<abbr>MSCoRE<\/abbr>) in 2017<\/a>, with a goal of bringing together materials experts and infrastructure scattered around several colleges and departments under one group in support of education, innovation and to lay the foundation for a future materials science center at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa.<\/p>\n<p>Under <abbr>MSCoRE<\/abbr>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa developed a popular research experience class for undergraduates and became successful in obtaining grants to bolster its materials science program. One of its early successes was earning a U.S. Department of Energy grant to study hydrogen storage materials.<\/p>\n<h2>Materials Research and Education Consortium<\/h2>\n<p>Utilizing this momentum, researchers from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa and the University of Washington (<abbr>UW<\/abbr>) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2021\/09\/14\/800k-boosts-minority-students\/\">received a seed award from the National Science Foundation&#8217;s (<abbr>NSF<\/abbr>) Partnerships for Research and Education in Materials (<abbr>PREM<\/abbr>) program in 2021<\/a>. The collaboration, known as the Materials Research and Education Consortium (<abbr>MRE-C<\/abbr>), is made up of seven <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa faculty from <abbr>HIGP<\/abbr>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hnei.hawaii.edu\/\"><span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Natural Energy Institute<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Engineering<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a>, as well as faculty from the <abbr>UW<\/abbr> Molecular Engineering Materials Center.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>MRE-C<\/abbr> conducts public school visits around the islands to increase student interest and participation in materials science and <abbr title=\"Science Technology Engineering Mathematics\">STEM<\/abbr>, and facilitates student exchanges at the undergraduate and graduate levels between <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa and <abbr>UW<\/abbr>.
