This year\u2019s theme came from the <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;\u014dlelo<\/span> <span lang=\"haw\">no&#699;eau<\/span> (Hawaiian poetical saying): &ldquo;Pala ka hala, momona ka <span lang=\"haw\">h\u0101&#699;uke&#699;uke<\/span>\u2026 momona ka uhu.&rdquo; (When the hala fruits are ripe, the sea urchins and parrotfish are fat and ready.)<\/p>\n<p>The proverb celebrates the richness of the season and the value of kilo, closely observing the environment. That spirit guided the day\u2019s activities, which encouraged guests to see their role in caring for the ecosystems that feed and sustain <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>Hands-on learning<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_223275\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-223275\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hilo-ikuwa-festival-3-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"group of hula dancers performing\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-223275\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hilo-ikuwa-festival-3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hilo-ikuwa-festival-3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/hilo-ikuwa-festival-3.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-223275\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span lang=\"haw\">&#699;\u014clapa<\/span> hula (dancers) share mele (songs) at <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;Imiloa<\/span>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Festival attendees joined hands-on workshops and cultural games, learned about traditional navigation from <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;ohana<\/span> <span lang=\"haw\">wa&#699;a<\/span> (<span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s voyaging canoe family), and explored a traveling exhibit from <abbr>INPEACE<\/abbr> about loko <span lang=\"haw\">i&#699;a<\/span> (fishponds).
