This time, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eng.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Engineering<\/a> graduate and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2022\/03\/01\/miss-hawaii-usa-2022\/\">Miss <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr title=\"United States of America\">USA<\/abbr> 2022<\/a> is serving as a project engineer for the construction transformation at the heart of the M\u0101noa campus.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_223484\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-223484\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-mccarthy-kiana-yamat-2-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Kiana Yamat posing on top of a crane in construction gear.\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-223484\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-mccarthy-kiana-yamat-2-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-mccarthy-kiana-yamat-2-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-mccarthy-kiana-yamat-2.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-223484\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yamat now works as a project engineer for Hensel Phelps.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Yamat runs the office team for Hensel Phelps, the construction company in charge of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2024\/12\/03\/project-to-transform-heart-of-uh-manoa-campus\/\">M\u0101noa Mini Master Plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>She plays a key role managing contracts, ordering materials and handling finances in order to make these major upgrades to McCarthy Mall possible.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s surreal and it\u2019s an honor,&rdquo; said Yamat. &ldquo;Using the talent and experience gained from school, we are building something that impacts more than just the campus itself.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Giving back for future generations<\/h2>\n<p>A major part of the project is the construction of a modern building for interdisciplinary learning, which will replace Snyder Hall as the home of the <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Being a part of this opportunity is especially meaningful to Yamat, whose mother is a retired public school teacher with a special education background.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_223488\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-223488\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-mccarthy-kiana-yamat-4-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Yamat reviewing papers with two students.\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-223488\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-mccarthy-kiana-yamat-4-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-mccarthy-kiana-yamat-4-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-mccarthy-kiana-yamat-4.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-223488\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Yamat continues to give back to her alma mater.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Knowing that there are people like my mom that will one day influence the whole community, that\u02bbs a big deal,&rdquo; said Yamat.<\/p>\n<h2>Paving her path<\/h2>\n<p>During her time at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, Yamat was grateful for the many resources and partnering programs that the College of Engineering had to offer. Yamat connected with <abbr>UH<\/abbr> alumni at Hensel Phelps, who encouraged her to join the team.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Yamat is on the other end, inspiring future engineers.
