The activities were designed to make math and science concepts approachable and fun for keiki and their <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;ohana<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The partnership with the <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa math department gave our students a chance to experience math outside the classroom and it was great to see how excited students were while working at the different stations,&rdquo; said Pearl City Elementary Curriculum Coordinator Caryn Nunokawa. &ldquo;It was also wonderful to see student engagement and how the volunteers made math both fun and meaningful for everyone.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Among the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> participants was a math major who serves as president of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Math Club. She helped organize and facilitate the evening\u2019s activities, encouraging students to explore the creative side of math.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_223268\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-223268\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-math-pearl-city-stem-night-one-on-one-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"person helping a student\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-223268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-math-pearl-city-stem-night-one-on-one-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-math-pearl-city-stem-night-one-on-one-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-math-pearl-city-stem-night-one-on-one.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-223268\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sakura Takahashi helping a Pearl City Elementary student<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;I was a little nervous at first since it had been a while since I\u2019d worked with kids, but I\u2019m really glad we participated,&rdquo; said Sakura Takahashi. &ldquo;I believe early, positive exposure to <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> can make a big difference in how kids view math as they grow up.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>One moment that stood out to Takahashi was when she helped a girl who said she had never done origami before, and watching her excitement as she completed her first piece was very touching.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Times such as these remind me why creating accessible, joyful interactions with math is so important,&rdquo; said Takahashi.<\/p>\n<h2>Engaging students through math-inspired activities<\/h2>\n<p>The outreach is part of the Math Club\u2019s ongoing effort to connect with the broader community while building a sense of belonging among students on campus. Founded to help math majors and enthusiasts collaborate in a small-department setting, the club has expanded to include participants from across disciplines who share an interest in mathematical creativity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-math-pearl-city-stem-night-controls-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"kids looking at robots on a grid\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-223267\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-math-pearl-city-stem-night-controls-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-math-pearl-city-stem-night-controls-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/manoa-math-pearl-city-stem-night-controls.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the year, the club hosts monthly gatherings ranging from arts-based math projects to technical skill workshops.
