J. Elise Hannigan was named the state\u2019s teacher of the year, and Claire Ann Kalaunuola Domingo was named the state\u2019s charter school teacher of the year. Both were recognized at a ceremony at Washington Place on September 19.<\/p>\n<h2>Teacher of the Year: J. Elise Hannigan<\/h2>\n<p><span lang=\"haw\">Keaa&#699;au<\/span> High School educator J. Elise Hannigan (<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo, teaching certificate \u201813 and <abbr title=\"Master of Education\">MEd<\/abbr> \u201821) was named the 2026 <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Department of Education\u2019s (<abbr>DOE<\/abbr>) Teacher of the Year, earning top recognition amongst more than 13,000 educators statewide.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Little-kid me would never have believed this was possible,&rdquo; Hannigan said. &ldquo;More than anything, it shows that with hard work&#8212;and the support of people around you&#8212;amazing things are possible.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Hannigan has spent 13 years at <span lang=\"haw\">Keaa&#699;au<\/span> High, first as an English teacher and now as the freshman academy coordinator. <abbr>DOE<\/abbr> officials and colleagues said her leadership has transformed the campus experience&#8212;reviving the school\u2019s Summer Bridge program, mentoring seniors who guide incoming students and helping <span lang=\"haw\">Keaa&#699;au<\/span> earn national certification as a Model Academy.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;With teaching, of course, there are good days and bad days&#8212;but there is never a time when I feel like I\u2019m in the wrong place or doing the wrong thing,&rdquo; said Hannigan, who made the switch from a career in ophthalmology.<\/p>\n<h2>Charter School Teacher of the Year: Claire Ann Kalaunuola Domingo<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_222714\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-222714\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/hilo-2025-charter-teacher-of-the-year-domingo-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"people smiling\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-222714\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/hilo-2025-charter-teacher-of-the-year-domingo-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/hilo-2025-charter-teacher-of-the-year-domingo-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/hilo-2025-charter-teacher-of-the-year-domingo.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-222714\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Claire Ann Kalaunuola Domingo with her <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;ohana<\/span> (Photo courtesy: Kalaunuola Domingo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Claire Ann Kalaunuola Domingo (<abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo, <abbr title=\"Bachelor of Arts\">BA<\/abbr> Hawaiian studies \u201897 and teaching certificate from the Kahuawaiola Indigenous Teacher Education Program \u201899) was honored as the 2026 <span lang=\"haw\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Charter School Teacher of the Year. Domingo has worked at Ke Kula <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;o<\/span> Samuel M. Kamakau <abbr>LPCS<\/abbr> for the past 25 years. She said the school\u2019s <span lang=\"haw\">nu&#699;ukia<\/span> or vision&#8212;&ldquo;E m&#257;lama <span lang=\"haw\">&#699;ia<\/span> ana ka mauli ola o k&#257;kou mai k\u0113l\u0101 hanauna a i k&#275;ia hanauna (Our spirit of being is nurtured from generation to generation)&rdquo;&#8212;guides her teaching practice.<\/p>\n<p>Each day begins with kilo (careful observation of the natural world) as students count lehua blossoms or feed the school\u2019s goats&#8212;a practice she says helps her kindergarteners recognize their own development.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I would like my students to love learning&#8212;in school, with their families, everywhere,&rdquo; said Domingo.<\/p>\n<h2><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s lasting impact<\/h2>\n<p>Both Hannigan and Domingo credit <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo\u2019s unique combination of offering a world-class education with personal connections that provide ongoing support for their success.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;All the beautiful relationships I made at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo have continued throughout my career wherever I have gone,&rdquo; described Domingo.<\/p>\n<p>Hannigan agreed, saying the strong foundation she built at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo has empowered her to serve her school and community.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;One of the things that I love about <abbr>UH<\/abbr> is that the connections last forever.
