Australia’s most acclaimed female Indigenous singer/songwriters join together with their sisters from New Zealand and Papua New Guinea as the Barefoot Divas in a powerful musical symbolic collaboration. Their critically acclaimed stage production, Walk a Mile in My Shoes is a unique musical creation expressing the diverse and life-affirming experiences of contemporary indigenous women. A combination of spoken word poetry, storytelling and song, Walk A Mile in My Shoes will be performed at the Leeward Theatre at Leeward Community College on February 7, 8 p.m.

More than a concert, the show is a cultural experience and an intimate disclosure about these talented performers finding commonality and strength in culture and language, as well as showcasing the soaring six-part harmonies and the phenomenal voices of the troupe. Barefoot Divas perform a combination of original compositions, Aboriginal language and a fusion of English and Maori (Te Reo) lyrics. Swinging between reggae, roots, jazz, R&B and Latin infused soul.

Helpmann Award winner Ursula Yovich (Aborigine Serbia/Burarra) and Black Arm Band favorite Emma Donovan (Aborigine Gumbaynggirr) join Whirimako Black (Maori), Maisey Rika (Maori), Merenia (Maori/Roma/Gypsy) and Ngaiire (Papua New Guinea) to share hilarious and heartfelt stories of life on the stage and on the road, fortified by deep connections to their land and culture.

Barefoot Divas are a group of funny, cheeky and uplifting women who can sometimes take their commentary on the contemporary music industry just a little bit too far. Provocative, hilarious, moving and insightful, Walk a Mile in My Shoes seeks to fulfill an audience’s desire for authentic, deeply-felt entertainment that will inspire and resonate with anyone interested in contemporary song writing and musical expression.
