The event combined the harvest crop with agricultural research and a commitment to feeding local families struggling with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> high cost of living.<\/p>\n<p>The kalo field was grown by Jensen Uyeda, an extension agent with the <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.ctahr.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience<\/a>. The plants were from several varieties: Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese and more. Those who had harvested kalo before helped the newcomers who were eager to learn.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-ctahr-kalo-harvest-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"harvesting kalo\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-221815\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-ctahr-kalo-harvest-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-ctahr-kalo-harvest-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/manoa-ctahr-kalo-harvest-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Everyone who participated got the chance to bring home huli (kalo top), for planting, as well as corms for their own use. For example, Adam Kekaula Hanohano planned to bring Hawaiian kalo back to his farm on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\u2019s\">O&#699;ahu\u2019s<\/span> North Shore.<\/p>\n<h2>Culinary innovation, food security<\/h2>\n<p>UGC is also collaborating with Lauren Tamamoto from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a> Culinary Innovation Center to turn the harvested kalo into innovative, value-added products. This partnership is designed to boost food security by creating new uses for local products and integrating student-driven innovation.<\/p>\n<p>Tamamoto is working with her students on product development, creating items such as a shelf-stable, freeze-dried curry with kalo cubes for emergency food, and instant hash browns. This exercise in culinary creativity helps develop new products for the Culinary Institute of the Pacific&#8217;s new restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>The main portion of the harvest was set aside for donation to The Pantry, bringing the bounty of the field to the wider community. <abbr>UGC<\/abbr> has donated more than 2,000 pounds of kalo to The Pantry in the last two years.<\/p>\n<p>The kalo harvest follows <abbr>UGC<\/abbr>&#8217;s cabbage harvest and green onion giveaways this summer.
