She works on <abbr>DPAA<\/abbr>\u2019s Korean War project, which involves identifying soldiers\u2019 remains disinterred from the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, also known as Punchbowl.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Every other week we\u2019re doing disinterments at Punchbowl, so we get eight sets of new remains and we go through those and go through the identification process using anthropological methods,&rdquo; Atkins said. &ldquo;It\u2019s just such a nice and meaningful job to have, and you always feel like you\u2019re doing something important.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Atkins said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa\u2019s anthropology department and the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/japanese-studies\/\">Center for Japanese Studies<\/a> played a critical role in her development.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> really shaped me into a more polished anthropologist,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;My advisor (Professor Christopher Bae) was so knowledgeable and helpful to me, and as a whole <abbr>UH<\/abbr> has been great for me. The Center for Japanese Studies was one of my funding outlets so I wouldn&#8217;t have been able to do my research without their funding. I also got a lot of experience at the John A. Burns School of Medicine\u2019s Willed Body Program.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>She continues to give back as a lecturer in forensic anthropology at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa.<\/p>\n<h2>Tarawa and Solomon Islands projects<\/h2>\n<p>Medrano, who graduated from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa with a bachelor\u2019s degree in anthropology in 2011 and <a href=\"https:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> with a certificate in forensic anthropology in 2017, works on <abbr>DPAA<\/abbr>\u2019s Tarawa and Solomon Islands projects. She analyzes both complete and fragmentary remains to help bring families answers after decades of uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It definitely is a privilege to work here to try to provide families with closure,&rdquo; Medrano said. &ldquo;These individuals have been looking for their family members, some going on 80 years because we deal with World War II individuals as well. It&#8217;s a really awesome feeling to be able to give that to family members.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Medrano said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> provided the mentorship and opportunities that led her into the field.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;When I first started there, I had really good mentors. <abbr title=\"Doctor\">Dr<\/abbr>. (Miriam) Stark was really integral in my education, and <abbr>Dr<\/abbr>. (Christopher) Bae was also really important too,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;Luckily, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> had the forensic anthropology certificate program, and part of their curriculum was to do an internship here at <abbr>DPAA<\/abbr>. So it all kind of ties together.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>&lsquo;Dream job&rsquo;<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_220485\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-220485\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/system-uh-dpaa-mou-signing-leaders-with-alums-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people standing and smiling\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-220485\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/system-uh-dpaa-mou-signing-leaders-with-alums-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/system-uh-dpaa-mou-signing-leaders-with-alums-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/system-uh-dpaa-mou-signing-leaders-with-alums.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-220485\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Atkins and Medrano were among the attendees at the Education Partnership Agreement signing in August 2025.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The graduates\u2019 work comes as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2025\/08\/19\/uh-dpaa-mou-signing\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> and <abbr>DPAA<\/abbr> strengthen ties through a new five-year Education Partnership Agreement signed in August 2025<\/a>. The agreement aims to expand research collaborations, student opportunities and scientific innovation to advance <abbr>DPAA<\/abbr>\u2019s humanitarian mission.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think for forensic anthropologists as a whole, working at the <abbr>DPAA<\/abbr> is where you would like to end up&#8212;a lot of people\u2019s dream jobs,&rdquo; Atkins said. &ldquo;I would like for anthropologists and just anyone in any field to know that you can get to your ultimate dream goal for a job.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I came in as a 3rd-year undergraduate at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and I was still trying to find my path.
