This fall, Solnit will also serve as the Dai Ho Chun Distinguished Chair at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p>Her talk, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/speakers\/rebecca-solnit\/\"><em>We Make the Future in the Present<\/em><\/a>, is set for Thursday, September 25 at 6:30 p.m. in Orvis Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/rebecca-solnit-we-make-the-future-in-the-present-tickets-1471368024369?aff=oddtdtcreator\">reservations are encouraged<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Solnit is known for weaving history, politics and art into stories that spark action. She has authored more than 25 books on topics ranging from feminism and climate change to walking and photography. Her works include <em>Men Explain Things to Me<\/em> and <em>A Paradise Built in Hell<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;She\u2019s a singular voice for hope, love, and action in an age too often overcome by despair, rage and cynicism,&rdquo; said Peter Arnade, dean of <abbr>CALL<\/abbr>. <\/p>\n<h2>Insightful and inspiring<\/h2>\n<p>Solnit has received the National Book Critics Circle Award, a Guggenheim fellowship, and contributes regularly to <em>Harper\u2019s<\/em> and <em>The Guardian<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Rebecca Solnit is one of the most insightful and inspiring public intellectuals of our time,&rdquo; said John Zuern, chair of the English department. &ldquo;Whether she\u2019s writing about the history of photography, the solidarities that emerge out of catastrophes, the pleasures of long walks, or George Orwell\u2019s gardening, I\u2019m always happy to let Solnit explain things to me.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Solnit\u2019s public lecture event is supported by the Dai Ho Chun Endowment for Distinguished Lecturers and organized in coordination with the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/speakers\/\">M\u0101noa Better Tomorrow Speaker Series<\/a>.
