The University of Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> marked the success of a first-of-its-kind pilot program designed to strengthen the next generation of conservation leaders in Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> by blending academic training with hands-on professional development.<\/p>\n

The inaugural Conservation Program Management Intensive over two weeks in August 2025, collaboratively offered by the UH<\/abbr> Mānoa Outreach College<\/a> and College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience<\/a>\u2019s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management<\/a> (NREM<\/abbr>), with support from the UH<\/abbr> System Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation<\/a> and UH<\/abbr> Sea Grant<\/a>, brought together 22 participants: seven UH<\/abbr> Mānoa conservation-focused graduate students and 15 conservation professionals, many from the Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Land and Natural Resources\u2019 (DLNR<\/abbr>) Divisions of Aquatic Resources and Forestry and Wildlife, one from The Nature Conservancy and several from across the UH<\/abbr> System. Students represented all four counties in Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Participants learned directly from more than two dozen expert instructors and professionals representing agencies and organizations across the Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> conservation landscape, including UH<\/abbr> Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit, UH<\/abbr> Hilo, UH<\/abbr> Mānoa NREM<\/abbr>, Hālau ʻŌhiʻa<\/span>, Heʻeia<\/span> Ahupuaʻa<\/span> Kākoʻo<\/span> ʻŌiwi<\/span>, Paepae o Heʻeia<\/span> and National Estuarine Research Reserve, The Nature Conservancy, DLNR<\/abbr> Chair\u2019s Office and the Divisions of Aquatic Resources, Forestry and Wildlife, and Conservation and Resources Enforcement, the Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Attorney General\u2019s Office, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Congressman Ed Case, Kupu, and UH<\/abbr> Mānoa\u2019s Lyon Arboretum, among others.<\/p>\n
