The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> is expanding its use of artificial intelligence (AI<\/abbr>) technology to support students across the entire system. By the end of fall 2025, all 10 UH<\/abbr> campuses will have launched their own student-success chatbots. UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa was the first to introduce its version, “\u2018Bow the Bot<\/a>,” in 2023.<\/p>\n

The five-year, $1.8-million contract with education technology company EdSights provides each campus with a proactive AI<\/abbr> chatbot designed to check in with students, connect them to resources and provide valuable insights into student needs. The initiative is part of UH<\/abbr>\u2019s broader Student Success strategy to create a “common standard of care” for all students, regardless of campus.<\/p>\n

Regular check-ins<\/h2>\n

Unlike traditional chatbots that simply answer questions, the EdSights platform initiates regular conversations with students at key points in the semester. For example, during the first week of classes, a bot may text: “How are you feeling about the start of the semester?” Student responses trigger tailored follow-ups, helping to pinpoint issues such as financial aid, housing, time management or mental health. Students are then connected directly to the appropriate support service on their campus.<\/p>\n

“Students tell us they appreciate having a convenient, judgment-free way to share what they\u2019re going through,” said Kim Siegenthaler, UH<\/abbr> senior advisor. “The chatbots give us immediate insights into challenges students are facing, while also generating data we can use to anticipate needs and strengthen long-term support.”<\/p>\n

High rates of student participation<\/h2>\n

Opt-in rates have been very high: about 93% of UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students and 98% of UH<\/abbr> Hilo students, whose chatbot is named Lehua, are participating. <\/p>\n

“At UH<\/abbr> Hilo, our students have already embraced Lehua,” said Chancellor Bonnie Irwin. “She\u2019s become a friendly presence that checks in and helps students feel supported, especially when challenges arise.”<\/p>\n

The initiative also provides UH<\/abbr> with systemwide and campus-specific data, allowing leaders to identify both localized challenges and broader trends. <\/p>\n

“This dual focus means we can respond quickly to individual students while also addressing the root causes that affect large groups of learners in the longer term,” Siegenthaler added.<\/p>\n

Commitment to student success<\/h2>\n

Honolulu Community College, Kapiʻolani<\/span> Community College and UH<\/abbr> Maui College launched their chatbots (Niu, Manu and ulu) in August. <\/p>\n

“Manu, Kapiʻolani<\/span> Community College\u2019s new chatbot, has taken its first flight to serve our students,” said Chancellor Misaki Takabayashi. “Manu will help connect students quickly and accurately to the resources they need, strengthening our ability to support their success. And as always, our dedicated counselors are here to provide further guidance and care.”<\/p>\n

“At UH<\/abbr> Maui College, ulu reflects our values of growth and resilience,” said Chancellor Lui Hokoana. “Our students know that no matter where they are on their journeys, our chatbot ulu is there to guide them and point them to the help they need.”<\/p>\n

As each campus rolls out its own chatbot, UH<\/abbr> is also investing in more technology<\/a> to enhance student engagement, belonging and persistence to graduation across the state.<\/p>\n
