(Photo credit: Howard Wolff Photography)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is remembering Dais\u014dsh\u014d Genshitsu Sen, a 15th-generation tea master, who shared bowls of tea with presidents, royalty, and everyday people, always as an offering of peace. His connection to <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa stretched across more than seven decades, shaping a legacy of culture and learning. Sen, a global ambassador of the Way of Tea, died in Kyoto, Japan, on August 14. He first studied at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa in the early 1950s and began offering evening classes in Japanese tea ceremony, known as chad\u014d or the &ldquo;Way of Tea&rdquo; on the campus and in the community. His lessons fostered a lasting legacy. (Photo credit: Howard Wolff Photography)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Building bridges<\/h2>\n<p>Returning regularly to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, Sen\u2019s gifts to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> extended far beyond <span aria-label=\"Jakuan\">Jaku&#699;an<\/span>. He established the Sen S\u014dshitsu <abbr title=\"Roman numeral fifteen\">XV<\/abbr> Distinguished Chair in History and the Sen International <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/japanese-studies\/home\/way-of-tea-center\/\">Way of Tea Center<\/a> within the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/japanese-studies\/\">Center for Japanese Studies<\/a> (<abbr>CJS<\/abbr>) at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p>Through his Midorikai scholarship, Sen sent generations of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa students to Kyoto to study tea at Urasenke headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He had the ability to walk in a room and his presence would immediately grab the eyes of every individual there\u2026somehow I feel that all of his innumerable accolades can\u2019t possibly define quite how great he was. It was with good reason that my predecessor, <abbr>CJS<\/abbr> Director Mary McDonald nominated Dr. Sen for the Nobel Peace Prize in light of his remarkable engagement in trying to bring &lsquo;peacefulness through a bowl of tea&rsquo; even in strife torn locations, meetings with global political leaders and other great spiritual leaders. During World War <abbr title=\"Roman numeral two\">II<\/abbr>, he trained in the Japanese Navy\u2019s kamikaze corps but was pulled back before flying a mission. Instead, he served tea to his fellow pilots before they departed. That moment, he later said, cemented his lifelong mission of seeking peace through tea.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;He was a man of principle, empathy, and kindness whose ethical compass served to better an often troubled world. <em>Dr. Sen no gomeifuku wo kokoro yori oinori itashimasu<\/em>,&rdquo; said Peter Arnade, dean of the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/call\/\">College of Arts, Languages and Letters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Marking milestones<\/h2>\n<p>In 2023, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Legislature honored Sen\u2019s 100th birthday, the 50th anniversary of <span aria-label=\"Jakuan\">Jaku&#699;an<\/span>, and the work of the Way of Tea Center.
