Along Japan\u2019s Sea of Japan coast, they are increasingly seen interacting with fishing operations&#8212;damaging gear and removing fish from nets&#8212;making it vital to understand their movement patterns.<\/p>\n<p>While southward migrations have been better documented, their return journey in spring has remained elusive due to challenges like tag loss and tracking limitations.<\/p>\n<h2>Abundant prey, energy conservation<\/h2>\n<p>A northern fur seal\u2019s spring migration toward northern breeding colonies is influenced by two critical factors: locating abundant prey and utilizing ocean currents to minimize energy expenditure.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Specific seafloor features may concentrate prey resources, and water temperature data suggest that animals may be foraging in the Kuroshio\u2013Oyashio Transition Zone, where prey availability is high,&rdquo; said Heping Li, lead author and doctoral student at Kyoto University.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_219946\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-219946\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/manoa-soest-northern-fur-seal-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"map\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-219946\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/manoa-soest-northern-fur-seal-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/manoa-soest-northern-fur-seal-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/manoa-soest-northern-fur-seal-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-219946\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Norther Fur Seal habitat range. (Photo credit: NOAA Fisheries)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Seals also showed a high tendency to travel near the edges of anticyclonic eddies, where high-velocity regions may reduce travel cost,&rdquo; added Ryo Dobashi, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/oceanography\/\">oceanography<\/a> graduate student in the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>.(<abbr>SOEST<\/abbr>)<\/p>\n<p>Movement patterns revealed two distinct phases: in the stay phase, south of 43&#176; N, seals exhibited slower movements with frequent course changes, while in the northbound transit phase, when they were north of 43&#176; N, their movement became faster and more directed.
