Richardson School of Law<\/a>. The training course was provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.hawaii.edu\/ka-huli-ao-center-excellence-native-hawaiian-law\">Ka Huli Ao Center for Excellence in Native Hawaiian Law<\/a>. The training was funded by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oha.org\/\">Office of Hawaiian Affairs<\/a> and held on January 11, 2014. <\/p>\n<p>Maui County Council Chair Gladys Baisa described the training as &ldquo;an essential program for public servants in making crucial decisions for the community.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The training included a variety of speakers and Native Hawaiian law attorney and Ka Huli Ao Director <strong>Melody Kapilialoha MacKenzie<\/strong> opened the training and was followed by Office of Hawaiian Affairs Chief Executive Officer <span aria-label=\"Kamanaopono\">Kamana&#699;opono<\/span> Crabbe. William Aila, director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/dlnr.hawaii.gov\/\">Department of Land and Natural Resources<\/a>, spoke about the impact of decision-making on Native Hawaiian culture and practices. Professor of ethnic studies <strong>Davianna McGregor<\/strong> provided training attendees with a historical overview and context for understanding <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s unique laws.<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Forman<\/strong>, director of the Environmental Law Program, presented on Native Hawaiian traditional and customary practices. <strong><span aria-label=\"Kapuaala\">Kapua&#699;ala<\/span> Sproat<\/strong>, former <a href=\"http:\/\/earthjustice.org\/\">Earthjustice<\/a> staff attorney and now assistant professor, explained the legal and cultural framework for water resource management in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. Assistant Professor <strong>Malia Akutagawa<\/strong> discussed the laws relating to iwi k&#363;puna or Native Hawaiian human burial remains. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As chair of the Maui County Council, I echo Professor <span aria-label=\"Kapuaala\">Kapua&#699;ala<\/span> Sproat&#8217;s statement that the best policy is usually based on shared knowledge and not on litigation,&rdquo; said Baisa. &ldquo;Understanding our unique history and the priorities set forth by the Office of Hawaiian Affairs are crucial in policy making for proper resource management that is pono.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I heard nothing but good things from those who attended,&rdquo; said MacKenzie. &ldquo;Everyone really appreciated all of the information and felt that they had substantially increased their understanding of the laws protecting Native Hawaiian natural and cultural resources.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>For a list of the state and county lawmakers and federal employees who attended the training, read the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.edu\/news\/article.php?aId=6234\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa news release<\/a>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>State and county lawmakers receive training course on Native Hawaiian law at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa&#8217;s William S.
