Young<\/strong>. &ldquo;The <span aria-label=\"Niihau\">Ni&#699;ihau<\/span> cohort&#8217;s graduation is a great example of the college&#8217;s outreach and distance programs and our efforts to serve Native Hawaiians. I am also grateful to our faculty who extended themselves to make this happen.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to protect and preserve <span aria-label=\"Niihau\">Ni&#699;ihau<\/span> School under the No Child Left Behind Act, these teachers began their participation in a unique program five and a half years ago. Spearheaded by <span arai-label=\"Hookulaiwi\">Ho&#699;okul&#257;iwi<\/span> Center for Native Hawaiian and Indigenous Education in the <a href=\"https:\/\/coe.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Education<\/a>, the program gained the support of many government agencies, including the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Legislature, Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Department of Education, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Teachers Standards Board and the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. Owners and families of <span aria-label=\"Niihau\">Ni&#699;ihau<\/span> also came together in support of these teachers and their school.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My experience in the College of Education has been a great and life changing experience,&rdquo; Kanahele said. &ldquo;I have learned so much through the guidance of numerous <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa faculty. Our last year in the program was also a success because of the College of Education&#8217;s financial support. There were so many obstacles, but it was worth it.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span arai-label=\"Hookulaiwi\">Ho&#699;okul&#257;iwi<\/span> secured grant funding from <abbr>OHA<\/abbr> to offset the costs of tuition and conducting classes on <span aria-label=\"Niihau\">Ni&#699;ihau<\/span>, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>. Instructors from <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui&#257;kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a> and the College of Education worked with <span aria-label=\"Niihau\">Ni&#699;ihau<\/span> cohort coordinators, <strong>Kahea Faria<\/strong> and <strong>Jay Taniguchi<\/strong>, to hold classes during school breaks and holidays so there was no disruption in the children&#8217;s learning on <span aria-label=\"Niihau\">Ni&#699;ihau<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Kelley added, &ldquo;Earning a degree was a challenge for me, but the journey was worth the time.
