Held July 8&#8211;29, 2025, the innovative three-week program combined academic coursework with full cultural immersion. It began with four days of classes at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa followed by 11 days in Kagoshima, Japan where students engaged in academic and cultural classes, activities and experiences. I could see that there\u2019s a bridge of humanity covering the vast river of languages and cultural differences.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Cseretha Jones, a Leilehua High alumna interested in biochemistry or psychology, drew powerful cultural connections during her time in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We visited Sakurajima and got to witness the Sogadon no Kasayaki festival from front-row seats,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;The heat of the umbrellas burning against the night sky reminded me of the times I visited the Polynesian Cultural Center, where night performances and storytelling were huge forms of entertainment. Being able to be a part of this (Japan) experience made me appreciate home a little more.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_219598\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-219598\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/manoa-css-kagoshima-sakurajima-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"at a cultural festival\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-219598\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/manoa-css-kagoshima-sakurajima-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/manoa-css-kagoshima-sakurajima-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/manoa-css-kagoshima-sakurajima.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-219598\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students visited Sakurajima and witnessed the Sogadon no Kasayaki Festival, which commemorates the filial piety of the Soga brothers who, according to legend, burned umbrellas as torches when they avenged their father\u2019s death 17 years after his passing.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Participants earned three <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa credits through the Social Sciences 124 course, &ldquo;Leadership and Social Issues,&rdquo; applying their classroom learning to real-world contexts through field visits, community exchanges and reflections&#8212;all while giving them a good start on their freshmen year at the flagship campus of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System.<\/p>\n<p>Now back home and preparing for their first semester at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, these students bring with them more than early college credit&#8212;they carry a global awareness and experiences that will shape their personal and academic paths for years to come.<\/p>\n<p>Program instructor locally and abroad was Eiko Ushida, with leadership provided by Professor Nori Tarui, senior advisor to the <abbr>CSS<\/abbr> Dean on <a href=\"https:\/\/socialsciences.manoa.hawaii.edu\/study-at-css\/enrollment-pathways\/css-international\/\">Global College Initiatives<\/a>, and chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economics.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Economics<\/a>; and Spencer Kimura, <abbr>CSS<\/abbr> director of international programs.<\/p>\n<p>M&#257;noa Academy Kagoshima was sponsored by <abbr>CSS<\/abbr>, Kagoshima University, Hawaiian Airlines, Shigetomi Shoji <abbr title=\"Company\">Co<\/abbr>., <abbr title=\"Limited\">Ltd<\/abbr>. and Fujitsu.
