Furthermore, the state consumes nearly nine times more energy than it produces, primarily relying on petroleum, which accounts for 80&#37; of total energy consumption.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Through producing this report, we found that solar, wind, and batteries on their own will not scale to meet the needs we have,&rdquo; said Nicole Lautze, report co-author and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.higp.hawaii.edu\/hggrc\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Groundwater and Geothermal Resources Center<\/a> in the Âé¶¹´«Ã½M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>. &ldquo;Firm (24\/7) power generation, which geothermal offers, will be required for the state to achieve 100&#37; renewable.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The report evaluated non-fossil fuel solutions, which include solar, wind, hydro, biomass, nuclear, geothermal and ocean. This analysis aims to stimulate conversation on how the state should prepare for a non-fossil fuel economy.<\/p>\n<h2>Economic vulnerability, oil supply unreliability<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_219192\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-219192\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/manoa-soest-renewable-energy-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"drilling\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-219192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/manoa-soest-renewable-energy-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/manoa-soest-renewable-energy-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/manoa-soest-renewable-energy.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-219192\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exploring for geothermal energy potential requires drilling to collect deep rock samples.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to the report\u2019s analysis, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> economy is vulnerable to structural instability within the global oil market. As <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\u2019s\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½\u2019s<\/span> electricity prices are more than double the U.S. average, the state\u2019s oil supplies are unreliable in source and price, and the overall global supply is not the only factor in this unreliability. Within 10&#8211;20 years, the report suggests, that reliance on oil should be phased out.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The state should develop post-fossil fuel energy generation and economic capabilities that do not wholly depend on oil, or petroleum products,&rdquo; said Peter Sternlicht, one of the report\u2019s co-authors, and board member of <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainableenergyhawaii.org\/\">Sustainable Energy <span aria-label=\"Hawaii.\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Researchers examined <span aria-label=\"Hawaii's\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½&#8217;s<\/span> economic activity, using the data from 2019, and evaluated non-fossil fuel solutions including geothermal.
