Ten students participated virtually across the state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, Guam and the continental U.S. and represented <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, Boston University and the University of Guam.<\/p>\n<p>Two newly hired facilitators served as peer mentors, guiding students in applying cyberinfrastructure resources and methods to their research projects. Students met daily to brainstorm and refine research topics, participated in Jetstream2 training, and completed an introduction to high performance computing (<abbr>HPC<\/abbr>), which included an onboarding session for Koa, the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <abbr>HPC<\/abbr> cluster. Additionally, students explored National Science Foundation (<abbr>NSF<\/abbr>)-funded ACCESS resources along with open-source platforms such as Anaconda.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_219147\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-219147\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/manoa-cyberinfrastructure-program-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"two people smiling\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-219147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/manoa-cyberinfrastructure-program-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/manoa-cyberinfrastructure-program-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/manoa-cyberinfrastructure-program-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-219147\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CI-SIP student Anne Mailing with mentor, PhD student Brian Gorberg.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>CI-SIP<\/abbr> program this year was a remarkable showcase of what\u2019s possible when talented students are given the tools, mentorship and compute power to explore complex problems,&rdquo; said program lead Alexander Stokes, assistant professor of cellular and molecular biology at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"https:\/\/jabsom.hawaii.edu\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a>. &ldquo;From flood awareness apps and environmental dashboards to protein modeling, <abbr title=\"artificial intelligence\">AI<\/abbr>-driven performance forecasting, and bilingual science tools, the projects reflected a stunning diversity of topics\u2014many of which addressed challenges in health and sustainability. While not every project focused on <abbr>AI<\/abbr>, several used high-performance computing resources like Jetstream2 and <abbr>UH<\/abbr>\u2019s Koa cluster to push the limits of data exploration\u2014and many students expressed a strong desire to go even deeper into <abbr>AI<\/abbr> applications.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<h2>Individual projects<\/h2>\n<p>Students worked with large language models and gained skills in data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning through self-paced learning modules.
