He assembles and ships customized lab kits containing equipment for about 12 experiments, all packaged and checked out as library items.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We should really call it &lsquo;remote&rsquo; learning, as opposed to online learning, because the students are actually doing the labs, using equipment to take measurements,&rdquo; Dempsie said.<\/p>\n<h2>Serving students across the state<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_218621\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-218621\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/kauai-physics-remote-1-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Dempsie at a computer\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-218621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/kauai-physics-remote-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/kauai-physics-remote-1-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/kauai-physics-remote-1.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-218621\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dempsie demonstrates labs included in the physics kit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Since 2020, Dempsie has served hundreds of students across the islands, with both calculus- and algebra-based physics sequences filling quickly. For fall 2025, he\u2019s mailing out almost 50 lab kits, with about two-thirds headed to neighbor islands and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The simpler the equipment is, the easier the students can grasp the concept,&rdquo; he said, as he demonstrated how the ultrasonic velocity measuring device included in the kit works. A line appeared on Dempsie\u2019s laptop screen as he drove a remote-controlled car further away from the device, while an arc appeared as a ball rolled down a slanted table.<\/p>\n<p>Although remote labs may lack the camaraderie of in-person labs, Dempsie said, &ldquo;Everyone has to pull their weight and can\u2019t rely on their lab partner to help them pass the class.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Redesigned during COVID-19<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_218620\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-218620\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/kauai-physics-remote-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Battery and electrical equipment\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-218620\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/kauai-physics-remote-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/kauai-physics-remote-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/kauai-physics-remote-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-218620\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A lab kit in the electrical\/magnetic\/optics and light focused course<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The innovative format began in fall 2020, when Dempsie foresaw the long-term impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and redesigned both his lecture and lab classes.
