Two longtime University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa faculty members, Kathryn Braun and Cullen Hayashida, played key roles in the 20th anniversary conference of the Active Aging Consortium in Asia Pacific<\/a> (ACAP<\/abbr>) held in Fukuoka, Japan, in March 2025. They joined a 10-member Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> delegation, including representatives from the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> State Department of Health and local k\u016bpuna-serving organizations.<\/p>\n

The conference brought together experts from more than 40 countries to share knowledge on dementia-friendly communities, digital inclusion, migration and care work, and intergenerational relationships.<\/p>\n

Braun, professor of public health at UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and current ACAP<\/abbr> president, is the principal investigator of the federally-funded H\u0101 K\u016bpuna National Resource Center for Native Hawaiian Elders<\/a> in the Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health<\/a>. She highlighted Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s rapidly aging population and the value of learning from other countries\u2019 experiences.<\/p>\n

“Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> is one of the most rapidly aging states in the nation, but not as fast as Japan and several other Asian countries,” said Braun. “These gatherings help us adapt successful models to meet Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s unique needs.”<\/p>\n

Hayashida, graduate affiliate faculty in UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s Department of Sociology<\/a>, School of Nursing<\/a> and Center on Aging<\/a>, is the founding director of the K\u016bpuna Education Center at Kapiʻolani<\/span> Community College. He described ACAP<\/abbr> as a vital network of researchers, educators, healthcare professionals, and advocates committed to active aging.<\/p>\n

“Active retirees should pivot from just being youthful to becoming useful contributors,” he said.<\/p>\n
