His next step is joining the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (<abbr>IBEW<\/abbr>) apprenticeship program. That\u2019s when he connected with <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr>\u2019s <span aria-label=\"Waialeale\">Wai&#699;ale&#699;ale<\/span> Project, a scholarship program that gives eligible <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Niihau\">Ni&#699;ihau<\/span> residents an opportunity to try college.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <span aria-label=\"Waialeale\">Wai&#699;ale&#699;ale<\/span> Project helped me be able to afford classes at <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>,&rdquo; Lazaro said. &ldquo;The beginning goal was just to learn the foundation of what to expect in the electrical field.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Saving time and money<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_215754\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-215754\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kauai-eimt-lazaro-2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Two smiling people\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-215754\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kauai-eimt-lazaro-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kauai-eimt-lazaro-2-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/kauai-eimt-lazaro-2.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-215754\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Instructor Veronica Rose and Anson Lazaro<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That foundation quickly grew into a clear path forward, thanks in part to new <abbr>EIMT<\/abbr> instructor Veronica Rose. A 47-year veteran of the <abbr>IBEW<\/abbr> local 640 in Phoenix, Arizona, Rose has brought valuable union connections and opportunities to <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> students.<\/p>\n<p>This semester marked the first time the <abbr>IBEW<\/abbr> director of apprenticeship flew from <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> to meet with <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> students, along with the <abbr>IBEW<\/abbr> local business rep&#8212;creating a direct pipeline from <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> to apprenticeship programs.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The certificate [in <abbr>EIMT<\/abbr>] gives students a door open into the apprenticeship that is not available to the normal person,&rdquo; said Rose. &ldquo;It allows them to skip the first year of apprenticeship classes and bypass testing preliminary qualifications.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>First-generation graduate<\/h2>\n<p>Attending <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> has required commitment. The drive from Waimea to the <span aria-label=\"Lihue\">L&#299;hu&#699;e<\/span> campus is about one hour each way. Lazaro also works two jobs&#8212;averaging a combined 32 hours a week&#8212;as a crewmember for Blue Ocean Adventure Tours and as a ramp agent for Alaska Airlines.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"blocklink\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/tag\/commencement\/\">Meet more amazing <abbr>UH<\/abbr> spring graduates<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Graduating means a lot,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;I\u2019m the first in my family to finish college, and I hope my younger sister sees that and follows her own path to college.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Waialeale\">Wai&#699;ale&#699;ale<\/span> Program Coordinator Lahea Salazar said, &ldquo;Anson possesses the right combination of drive, intelligence and interpersonal skills to excel and make a difference in this world.
