  {"id":21524,"date":"2013-12-16T18:00:28","date_gmt":"2013-12-17T04:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=21524"},"modified":"2023-03-15T14:00:55","modified_gmt":"2023-03-16T00:00:55","slug":"major-upgrade-for-uh-information-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/12\/16\/major-upgrade-for-uh-information-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Major upgrade for <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> information technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/technology\/itcenter\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> Information Technology Center<\/a> represents a massive upgrade for the 10-campus <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System.<\/p>\n<p>The state-of-the-art, six-story, 74,000 square foot facility was dedicated December 2013 on the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis building is about reliability, energy efficient, security and better housing of our physical assets and our support staff,\u201d said <strong>David Lassner<\/strong>, the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> interim president.<\/p>\n<p>At the center\u2019s blessing ceremony, Lassner stressed the huge impact the $41 million center would have on <abbr>UH<\/abbr> students, faculty and staff statewide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is where we will be housing our student information, our financial information, our personnel information and these are facilities that now don\u2019t need to be duplicated on all of our campuses,\u201d said Lassner.<\/p>\n<p>The new facility frees up space on all campuses since the servers containing that information are now stored in a highly secured, 8,000 square foot data center on the facility\u2019s second floor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have card access, both to the building, but also to the data center and the rooms,\u201d said Lassner. \u201cAnd again, when this stuff is scattered all around the campus, you\u2019re never quite sure who might have access to those rooms.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21517\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21517\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-21517\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/its-interior.jpg\" alt=\"room with computer monitors\" width=\"400\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/its-interior.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/its-interior-260x152.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21517\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The <abbr>IT<\/abbr> Operations Center on the second level of the building provides 24\/7 proactive monitoring of all <abbr>IT<\/abbr> systems.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Top-notch security is just one of the <abbr>IT<\/abbr> center\u2019s many benefits said Lassner. \u201cThe biggest impact on students will be the assurance of more reliable service for their online learning, student information systems, access to global resources, high performance computing to support innovation and research, data storage to support big data projects and the work we are doing on all of the disciplines, the scholarly work on all of the campuses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><abbr>IT<\/abbr> staff and offices from multiple locations are now housed in one central facility that includes an emergency situation room, training lab, digital media center and videoconference rooms.
