(Graphics: <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Stories)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jeffrey &ldquo;Raven&rdquo; Kromer, a senior at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo, is reaching for the stars&#8212;literally. The double major in <a href=\"https:\/\/phys.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">physics and astronomy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/english\/\">English<\/a>, has received a national travel grant from <abbr title=\"National Aeronautics and Space Administration\">NASA<\/abbr>\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory to present his research at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hou.usra.edu\/meetings\/dunes2025\/\">8th International Planetary Dunes Workshop<\/a> in Alghero, Sardinia, Italy, this May.<\/p>\n<p>Kromer will present a project titled<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hou.usra.edu\/meetings\/dunes2025\/pdf\/3050.pdf\"> &ldquo;Visual Comparison of Morphologies of Martian Basaltic Sand Dunes with Terrestrial Basaltic Sand Dunes,&rdquo;<\/a> under his pen name, Raven Daegmorgan. His work compares sand dunes on Mars with basaltic grains found on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island\u2014showing how volcanic landscapes on Earth can help scientists better understand other planets.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Since both <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and Mars are volcanic, this island\u2019s geology makes a high-fidelity science analog with the Martian surface,&rdquo; said Kromer. &ldquo;Dunes have been detected on the rocky planets Venus and Mars and are thought to give insights on atmospheric conditions and climate history.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Pushing boundaries<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/nasa-logo.jpg\" alt=\"N A S A log\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-215207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/nasa-logo.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/nasa-logo-130x130.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Kromer\u2019s passion for planetary science is matched by his academic ambition. Earlier this year, he earned a <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Space Grant Consortium to study dark matter in dwarf galaxies under the mentorship of Nicole Drakos, a <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo assistant professor of physics and astronomy.
