The Indian dance concert, directed and produced by University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa professor Sai Bhatawadekar, transformed the Honolulu Museum of Art into a celebration of movement and culture.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-call-Indian-dance-8-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"person performing Indian dance\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-215065\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-call-Indian-dance-8-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-call-Indian-dance-8-130x130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-call-Indian-dance-8.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Kah&#257;n&#299; means story in Hindi, and that\u2019s exactly what the audience received&#8212;14 vivid tales told through dance, music and theater. From myths of celestial beings to the emotions of everyday life, the evening explored devotion, longing, love, loneliness, boldness and joy.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My intention was to bring various artists, students, and faculty together with the community and present the incredible variety of dance forms that have been and have become an integral part of Indian and South Asian culture, from classical to popular art, from ancient traditions to global flows,&rdquo; said Bhatawadekar.<\/p>\n<p>Bhatawadekar, who teaches in multiple <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa departments including <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/ipll\/\">Indo-Pacific languages and literatures<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/liveonstage\/\">theatre and dance<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/hawaii.edu\/phil\/\">philosophy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/asianstudies\/\">Asian studies<\/a>, brought together a cast and crew of 40 performers and technicians. A majority were connected to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> as faculty and students, including dancers, singers and guest artists.<\/p>\n<h2>Bollywood, hip hop<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-call-Indian-dance-16-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people performing Indian dance\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-215057\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-call-Indian-dance-16-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-call-Indian-dance-16-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-call-Indian-dance-16.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Each performance brought different styles and traditions: classical Bharatanatyam, semi-classical with Kathak, lively folk dance from Maharashtra, high-energy Bollywood numbers, contemporary and hip hop. The music ranged from traditional Indian ragas to modern beats, with rich poetry woven throughout.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I am profoundly grateful to the performers; it was an inspiring, joyous, and enriching experience to choreograph and dance with all of them, and to create the show as a whole,&rdquo; said Bhatawadekar.<\/p>\n<h2>National standout<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-call-Indian-dance-11-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"people performing Indian dance\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-215062\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-call-Indian-dance-11-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-call-Indian-dance-11-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/manoa-call-Indian-dance-11.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In 2022, Bhatawadekar garnered national recognition and rave reviews for her choreography.
