Starting as a stenographer in 1960, she worked her way through increasingly trusted business support roles\u2014serving deans, vice presidents and chancellors\u2014before retiring in 2002 as secretary to the interim Chancellor Deane Neubauer.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/manoa-takamura-family-reception-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"Takamura family enjoying the reception\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-214753\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/manoa-takamura-family-reception-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/manoa-takamura-family-reception-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/manoa-takamura-family-reception.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On April 28, Takamura returned to campus to celebrate a new chapter in her legacy. She and her sons&#8212;Blake, Guy and Clete, all <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa alumni, son-in-law Joe Whittinghill and daughter-in-law Teri Takamura&#8212;attended the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2025\/04\/22\/2025-manoa-awards\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Awards Ceremony<\/a>, where the first recipients of the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/staffsenate\/jean-takamura-staff-excellence-endowment-fund\/\">Jean Takamura Staff Excellence Award<\/a> were honored. The endowment, established by her family in tribute to Jean and their father, Yukio, is the university\u2019s first to recognize excellence among business support staff.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The university holds a special place in my heart from my 42 years working there and that all three of my sons are alumni,&rdquo; said Takamura. &ldquo;I am thankful to my sons and family for establishing this important award that recognizes staff as key parts of the university. I met both award recipients. They are wonderful people and I am so happy for them to be recognized.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Celebrating the inaugural honorees<\/h2>\n<p>The Jean Takamura Staff Excellence Award highlights the vital role of business support staff in the success of the University. Known for her &ldquo;quiet but effective&rdquo; approach, she plays a key role in fiscal operations, campus coordination and accessibility advocacy.<\/p>\n<p>Tom, machinist in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phys.hawaii.edu\/\">Department of Physics and Astronomy<\/a>, has served the university since 1967.
