With support from the National Science Foundation, co-principal investigators Ning Li and Lucia Hosekova brought their vision of helping teachers bring real-world ocean science into their classrooms to life.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This engaging and informative workshop, focused on local wave, reef, and coastal resilience conditions, aims to bridge the knowledge gap between academic and educational communities,&rdquo; Li said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_214691\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-214691\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/system-stem-pre-academy-waves-workshop-tina-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"person talking to another person\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-214691\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/system-stem-pre-academy-waves-workshop-tina-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/system-stem-pre-academy-waves-workshop-tina-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/system-stem-pre-academy-waves-workshop-tina.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-214691\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tina Young<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Through a series of demonstrations and expert talks, teachers learned how ocean waves are generated and how energy is transferred by waves. Teachers used wave tanks to explore how waves move, tested different ways to measure wave height and energy, and used model reefs to see how coral can help dissipate wave energy before it reaches the shore. They also learned how rising sea levels and other threats to our reefs might impact <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>\u2019s coastlines.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Coming together with scientists, engineers and teachers at this workshop reminded me how powerful it is when we all work toward a shared purpose,&rdquo; said Tina T. Young, a teacher at Waipahu Intermediate and graduate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a> and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa. &ldquo;I\u2019m excited to bring what we created back to my students&#8212;including a hands-on wave simulator that shows how waves contribute to coastal erosion, and a fun LEGO model to demonstrate why reefs are so important. It was designed to match middle school science standards and help teachers make science fun and meaningful for their students.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was a joy to see the passion with which the facilitators and teachers approached these topics and brought their own unique experiences and knowledge,&rdquo; Hosekova said.<\/p>\n<p>Since registration for the workshop filled up quickly, organizers are looking at ways to offer more workshops in the future to meet the strong interest.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These workshops are a vital step in building lasting, community-centered conversations around ocean renewable energy, and I look forward to expanding future sessions with even more opportunities for collaboration, listening and shared discovery,&rdquo; said Troy Heitmann, a workshop facilitator and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hnei.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Natural Energy Institute<\/a> assistant researcher.<\/p>\n<p>Educators who are interested in wave-related resources can explore the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacioos.hawaii.edu\/education-resources\/\"><abbr title=\"Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System\">PacIOOS<\/abbr> Education Resources<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/exploringourfluidearth\/physical\/waves\">Exploring our Fluid Earth<\/a> (secondary), <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/sealearning\/sea-curriculum\">Sea Earth Atmosphere<\/a> (elementary) and the <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Pre-Academy <a href=\"https:\/\/stempreacademy.hawaii.edu\/for-teachers\/\">teacher resources<\/a>.
