The other honorees were Gregory Dunn and Laurie Mizuno, both celebrated for their significant contributions to the <abbr>LGBTQIA+<\/abbr> community.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Words can\u2019t express how meaningful this honor is to me,&ldquo; Miyamoto said. &ldquo;It\u2019s humbling to have my contributions to our students at <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> and our larger <abbr>LGBTQ&#43;<\/abbr> community recognized. But for me, the true honor is to work for the success of <abbr>LGBTQ&#43;<\/abbr> students at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa on a daily basis.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Lifelong commitment to inclusion<\/h2>\n<p>Miyamoto launched <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s <abbr>LGBTQ&#43;<\/abbr> Center in 2002 and has led the center ever since. At the center, Miyamoto has created a supportive space for <abbr>LGBTQIA+<\/abbr> students, offering programs, counseling and advocacy to promote inclusion and success on campus.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_214702\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-214702\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/manoa-miyamoto-cameron-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"Cameron Miyamoto headshot\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-214702\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/manoa-miyamoto-cameron-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/manoa-miyamoto-cameron-93x130.jpg 93w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/manoa-miyamoto-cameron.jpg 373w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-214702\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cameron Miyamoto<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He began his advocacy as a graduate student at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>, drawn to the movement for marriage equality. The rise in harassment and lack of protections in schools at the time fueled his passion for making education safer for <abbr>LGBTQ&#43;<\/abbr> youth.<\/p>\n<p>As a founding board member of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>LGBT<\/abbr> Legacy Foundation, Miyamoto helped establish the <abbr>LGBT<\/abbr> Center Waik\u012bk\u012b and revitalize the Honolulu Pride Parade and Festival. Today, he supports the foundation\u2019s expansion of programs that serve traditionally underserved groups, especially k\u016bpuna and m\u0101h\u016b.<\/p>\n<p>Miyamoto\u2019s efforts extend beyond campus. He has served on national and local boards, including the Japanese American Citizens League, and has shared his scholarship on queer people of color through publications and national conferences.
