As director of the LGBTQ+<\/abbr> Center<\/a> at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M\u0101noa, Camaron Miyamoto has spent more than two decades uplifting and empowering LGBTQIA+<\/abbr> students\u2014work that was recently recognized at the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> LGBT<\/abbr> Legacy Foundation<\/a>\u2019s Vision Without Limits gala on April 3.<\/p>\n

Miyamoto was one of three honorees recognized for their visionary leadership and commitment to creating a safer, more inclusive Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>. The other honorees were Gregory Dunn and Laurie Mizuno, both celebrated for their significant contributions to the LGBTQIA+<\/abbr> community.<\/p>\n

“Words can\u2019t express how meaningful this honor is to me,“ Miyamoto said. “It\u2019s humbling to have my contributions to our students at UH<\/abbr> and our larger LGBTQ+<\/abbr> community recognized. But for me, the true honor is to work for the success of LGBTQ+<\/abbr> students at UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa on a daily basis.”<\/p>\n

Lifelong commitment to inclusion<\/h2>\n

Miyamoto launched UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s LGBTQ+<\/abbr> Center in 2002 and has led the center ever since. At the center, Miyamoto has created a supportive space for LGBTQIA+<\/abbr> students, offering programs, counseling and advocacy to promote inclusion and success on campus.<\/p>\n

He began his advocacy as a graduate student at UH<\/abbr>, drawn to the movement for marriage equality. The rise in harassment and lack of protections in schools at the time fueled his passion for making education safer for LGBTQ+<\/abbr> youth.<\/p>\n

As a founding board member of the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> LGBT<\/abbr> Legacy Foundation, Miyamoto helped establish the LGBT<\/abbr> Center Waik\u012bk\u012b and revitalize the Honolulu Pride Parade and Festival. Today, he supports the foundation\u2019s expansion of programs that serve traditionally underserved groups, especially k\u016bpuna and m\u0101h\u016b.<\/p>\n

Miyamoto\u2019s efforts extend beyond campus. He has served on national and local boards, including the Japanese American Citizens League, and has shared his scholarship on queer people of color through publications and national conferences. He earned his MA<\/abbr> in American studies from UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa and his doctorate in educational and professional practice from Antioch University.<\/p>\n

The Vision Without Limits gala supports the foundation\u2019s PRIDE365 initiative, which promotes year-round programs like Rainbow Support Circle and Queer Women\u2019s Initiative.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
